Summoned Dimwits

How do you control summoned monsters? Every time I summon them, they sit there with their backs to the enemy and get pounded to mush. They get skipped over on the initiative list and just sit there. Anyone know what is up?

You can't control them, but they should attack enemies of yours by themselves... <Shrug>
