Suggestion for a NPC
Suggestion for a NPC
I'm playing the following party (I'm still in cap.2):
PC: horc fighter(kensai)/thief
Jaheira: cleric/ranger
Tashia
Korgan
Solaufein
For my sixth char. I have some doubt:
(swash-)Imoen/Haerdalis: Imoen for roleplaying reason and because is a better mage; Haer. is a lesser mage but a backup fighter (plus the the extra bard abilities).
I would try Haer. (never played him before) but I'm not sure if in my party I'll need a better mage.

Hmm..
Isn't Jaheira a great cleric ranger?
Any NPC can happily add in, flavour to taste. I'd also go with more magery, so Imoen or HD would be fine, both bring something useful.
I'm assuming Sola is not actually there, you're just planning to pick him up later.

I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.
I'm not sure what the problem here is... You want Imoen (who you would edit to be a swashbuckler/mage) for roleplaying reasons... But you want Haer for his class...
So why not just edit Imoen so that she's a blade? You're already planning on editing her anyway, and you've edited your protagonist and Jaheira... Make Imoen a blade, have your character of choice and your class of choice. Problem solved.

Re: Hmm..
Indeed Jaheira is a great c/r.
I like to change the class of NPC when I start new game, so you can try different classes without going through Mclass (and the Mclass Char are boring!).
In another game I'm playing Jaheira as a fighter/avenger with Edwin sorcerer.
At the moment the party is PC, Jaheira, Korgan and Tashia.

That would partly solve the question, the other part is not having played a bard before I don't know if the loss of spellcasting (compared to Imoen) is compensated by the other abilities and how really capable fighter is a blade.
You have tashia and soulafein. I think you'll have enough spells even if you turn imoen into a swashbuckler.
Blades are good. I know many people disagree here. You can't expect them to just walk in and tank in every fight. They are more a character that can help out here and there. If you buff him with spells and spins he can be a super tank though. And in ToB you can use the bard song to great effect. He gets traps aswell.

You can't handle the truth!

Blades are awesome, especially since the manual isn't accurate. A Blade doesn't get a Pick Pocket Penalty, and the spells actually go up to level 8 by the end of the game. The blades only disadvantage left is the crappy bard song. That is solved by the awesome enhanced bard song in ToB.
So, you have a backup mage that can dual-wield & wear any of the several Bard's chain-mail, that hardly uses these skills because they constantly play the enhanced bard song.
And Imoen is a believable blade as she has the stats and is part Neutral. And her dialogue fits with the class as well.

I like using Haer-Dalis in TOB and same W/ Korgan but since Haer-Dalis and my P.C will fight over Aerie and Korgan will kill Aerie they don't get along together.
Haer-Dalis, In TOB actully had more spells than Aerie had
as in a mage
I use him for mostly offensive/defensive
Aerie is just for healing and attacking with Sling +5
