I agree with Curry. I like Khalid very much, roleplaying-wise. IMHO it's very refreshing to have a fighter who isn't all that courageous. And yes, in terms of power, Khalid isn't the best NPC in the game. But so what? One of the best things in this game is the fact that all these npc's aren't perfect. Would you really like to play with a party with perfect stats? It would make the game very dull.

I usually don't even go into the Friendly Arm until after I have cleared the Nashkell mines, so Khalid and Jaheira aren't even there. In the few occasions when I have wanted Jaheira in my party, Khalid has met a tragic and untimely end. Or at least wound up spending an awful lot of time talking to Volo in the Belching Dragon.

I just hate him. I'm a ranger so I don't need another archer and I've never used him as one. He was always at the front....but now I kicked him out, Jaheira also. I prefer Yeslick and Ajantis.

I usually go solo for the first 7 days or so of gametime to clear as many of the unimportant wilderness maps and keep the XP to myself. I clear Beregost of all lootable goodies, then usually arrive at the Friendly Arms Inn at 3 level or so. I'm playing a F/M/T right now, so the XP get cut three ways.
Anyhow, I always pick up Khalid and Jaheira for the trip to Nashkel mines just to keep inline with story as much as possible. Once I get up north however, Khalid usually goes head to head with a Wyvern or something nasty and *sniff* dies heroically.
Just curious - if you take Khalid's portrait for yourself, what portrait does the game asign him? I always, always take the green hooded archer portrait for myself, and it never occured to me who that was really meant for --Kivan? Coran?

LOL! Maybe Irenicus didn't kill Khalid at all. Khalid secretly killed himself in in the beginning of SoA. 'Omigod! I hear my wife coming! Goodbye cruel world! Aagkh -'

You know, except for a few times when I really don't blame him for running away (I.E. I would have moved him to the back lines for healing myself.) I've never really had much trouble with Khalid running away and I've always used him as a front line fighter next to myself, Minsc, and usually Jaheira.
