Asticana, I've added SPOILER to your thread title. Read the site owner's sticky thread about why you should do that, in the future. ;)

Concering Phaere, look on the right quarter of the map, and travel about halfway south. You should run into some new mindflayers (who spawn there just for the event). If you have a single character with the Shield of Balduran, there shouldn't be too many problems; just use 'em to attract the Illithi's attention.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

These are different mind flayers.

You'll find Solaufein across the bridge, near to the mind flayer dungeon - talk to him when you're ready to start the fight. Standard Mind flayer tactics apply - you can trap the area, use shield/cloak of cheese, and/or use a bunch of mind-flayer resistant summons (mord swords, skel warriors, etc.)

Good gaming!

Actually for a very easy fight...

SPOILER

...just use the 6th level mage spel "Death Spell". This isn't normally effective against mind flayers, but since these are considered summoned creatures, the whole lot of them are instantly killed, including the umber hulks. Very cheesy, but very effective.

Does the shield of cheese protect you against Mind flayer stuff? Cool! And what about improved Mind flayers?

That's its main purpose. :D

You are correct, the Shield of Balduran only works against Beholders. Nothing much protects against Mind-flayers' INT drain, except not letting them hit you. You can protect against their psionics by various methods.

But the problem with this particular battle is that you have to protect Phaere and Soulaufein, who don't have the sense to use the common cheesy tactics that every adventurer should know. And if either of them gets killed, it can make the game unfinishable. So I recommend blasting them with the Death Spell that I mentioned earlier, before they get a chance.

What did I just say?

Urgh, brain failure on the cloak/shield of cheese... (I was conflating the ilitihids with the beholders - don't laugh, you'll be old & senile one day, too) but area prep or instant death approaches are a good choice.
