How do you wield the 'Hammer artifact' gained by defeating one of the main Dagoth's in Red Mountain? I tried to equip it and it 'delt me a death blow'. Can this weapon be weilded? If so, how.

.. The hammer you have is called Sunder and you can't wear it just yet..
You'll find that out later in the game, don't want to spoil you , as i don't seem to understand how to make the text black so..

You'll eventually learn in course of the main quest. You might already have been aware about the set of three items, what includes the hammer you're speaking about, if you had sneaked in the secret library in Vivec and seen some papers there. There's a couple of other sources, usually books, too.
