yeah be careful thought when you pick pockets. If they catch you, they attack you along with everyone else in the room. You also lose whatever you took from them
If at first you don't succeed, reload and try again.

You can only pickpocket if you're succesfully sneaking. The same is true for stealing ANY stuff: if somebody notices you, you'll be under attack. Even if you survive, you still have a bounty on your head.

If you're an alchemist you can make a potion easily enough but I don't know who can teach you the spell.

Improve your alchemy

A lot of new players aren't aware that eating alchemical ingredients will improve their alchemy skill. There are tons of stuff in Morrowind and the ones found in nature will "regrow" in a a couple of game weeks. Eat everything you find, regardless of the effect - good or bad. At first most things won't even have an affect on you but occassionally they will. When this happens the effect will only last a second or two and dissapate, but you alchemy skill will improve. Check the skilll progress bar each time you're successful and you'll see it advance a bit. The effects of bad ingredients will be gone before it matters. After you reach a certain point (maybe 25 in alchemy) you will be able to see the second effect of the ingredient, around 50 you will be able to see the 3rd effect and around 75 the fourth effect. When you eat ingredients only the first effect matters so ignore the other effects listed. Once you are somewhat skilled and have some alchemy equipment you can try making your own potions. If nothing else its good experience and Creeper will pay you full price for your potions even if they are bad potions like Burden or Paralyze. There is some really nice alchemy equipment (master or grandmaster) in caves inhabited by necromancers. There is also some good starter equipment here (highlight for spoiler):

Go to the Vivic Arena canalworks area and search in the storerooms. One storeroom has rats in it (they respawn each time you come back). This storeroom is full of all kinds of goodies including some alchemy gear free for the taking.

You can buy Telekinesis in the Mages' Guild in Ald-Ruhn.

MAJOR SPOILERS:

There are a couple of free sets of glass armor but "free" also connotates "work". Both sets depend of your skills. You can steal a nearly complete set from the blacksmith in Ghostgate. He's in one of the two gate forts Dawn or Dusk. Go down to where the Bouyant Arminger quarters are and open the doors that aren't locked. Behind one is a blacksmith with glass armor on the shelf. You will need pretty decent sneak or chameleon skills for this set. Another set (the one I usually go for as soon as possible) is in Dagoth Ur's citidel. Go inside Ghostgate to the center of Red Mountain. Find the entrance to his citidel and start working your way through the ash zombies, ascended sleepers, and other minions. When you reach the Inner Facility you are getting close. You should find a dead adventurer wearing glass armor. I believe this is one of the Ghostgate Temple quests, though the quest is to retrieve a weapon not the armor. Yet another free set, or major parts at least can be found in Lost Kogoruhn, also on the body of a dead adventurer. Golden saints often carry glass shields. Of course you could always taunt a bouyant arminger into attacking you and take their armor.

The best non-enchanted short sword in the game is a daedric wakazashi. If you have Tribunal installed you are attacked by assassins frequently when you rest or sleep. While they usually carry dwarven and adamantite jink swords sometimes they will have wakazashis on them. There is a free wakazashi that is part of a House Hlaalu quest. This wakazashi is on a shipwreck near Bal Fell. I think the shipwreak has a name beginning with a "P" (I want to say Prelude but I can't be sure). Its one of few shipwreaks that actually has a name. Search for the shipwreak near the islands east of Bal Fell. It will be inside so water breathing is a good thing (enchant a shirt or belt with CE water breathing, wear it always and never worry about drowning again). A constant effect enchanted item with water walking comes in real handy for exploring the seas but a CE levitation item also will work if you don't want to swim. I usually make a ring with water walking and fortify speed for fast water travel (both effects will fit on a single exquisite ring easily). Of course dremora lords will also occassionaly carry wakazashis. Go into a daedric shrine, kill everyone then save. Now loot the alter and a dremora lord will materialize. Kill him and see what he has on him. If its not what you want, reload and try again because the items they carry are randomized.

The wakazashi on the ship, IIRC, is also a part of Telvani House questline. (I may be wrong, of course, do not like Telvani very much and haven't been in this House very long)

Levitate is found at the dark elf on bottom floor of Balmora's mages guild. Had trouble finding it meself har har har. Man I wish i could make a gauntlet of infinite throwing daggers like Jarlaxle has in R. A. Salvatore's books ;) By the way, what are the best "thrown" projectiles.

Throwing Weapons (Spoilers)

Unfortunately there aren't any great throwing weapons in the basic game. I like the throwing stars with elemental damage but they are few and far between. The best darts are probably the ebony darts but at 2000 gold each who's going to waste them by throwing them. I don't know of anyone who sells them either, but if you have Tribunal the assassins that spawn when you sleep often have one on them. Unfortunately they will probably throw it at you before you can kill them. There are also some daedric darts (part of a thieves guild quest) but were talking maybe 4 or 5 total.

Possible spoiler: In Tribunal you can get dwarven thowing darts, both enchanted and non-enchanted. Either do tremendous, almost obscene, amounts of damage. You get these off the dead bodies of dwemer robots when you get to the dwarven ruins portion of the saga. Nice thing about these is that the robots respawn when you leave and reenter the ruins so you can amass a good supply of these darts. Then there are the poison darts from the Black Dart Gang. These guys hang out in the tunnels below Mournhold. You have to find a way to kill them quickly so they don't use all their darts up throwing them at you. If you talk to a certain woman and ghost in the tunnels you will get the clues you need to defeat the gang. Again, this is a very limited supply. I don't have Bloodmoon, probably won't get it either, so I don't know what they have for darts.

There is a mod that adds a fletcher to Vivic's Foreign Quarters. She might sell better darts. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there. She sells nice enchanted arrows but I can't remember what, if any, darts she sells.

There (Aradraen's Fletcher shop from Area Effect Arrows plug-in) is a lot of darts, starts and throwing knifes - enchanted mostly, and not in so good selection as arrows and bolts, altogether there are also steel and glass stars and knifes. Neither Ebony nor Daedric items, though.
