HoU: How to fight mithral golems?
in HoU i am in the makers ruins and have to fight two mithral golems. i managed to drop one, but fairly close, no chance against the second one.
my character is a lvl20 paladin5/rogue5/champion10 with AC43 fully buffed, wileding the +8 vs construcs shortsword.
the walkthrough mentions some guy a level up where i can get the password.
the door is locked and trapped though.
any idea how to get into?
i tried to use the commanders ring (knock) on the door but it does not work.
is there a spell one could remove the trap with or is one of the henchmen capable of removing it?
would like to play further...

To get through that door you need either a high level rogue or a druid/ranger (I think either would do).
The doors trap and lock is difficult, but you can talk to one of the scavenger rats and get it to do something - although I've not tried this.
I would think the pixie familiar also might be able to open the door - because I know I've been in there withouth a rogue or druid/ranger
As for killing the Golems they are rather difficult, yes - but if I recall right, you can pull them to you one at the time by positioning yourself right on the pathway to the area where they are located.
I don't know if the Golem devices you can construct on the upper levels on the ruins will help also - it is worth a shot.

gah, totally forgot about the golem devices, didnt make them because i had no problems until then.
these should help a lot i think, especially the slow-device that should counter the haste-effect.
the golems have +36 to hit and are hasted, avergae damage is about 40.
i'll post some new things when the items helped since i dont have any mean to get a ranger, druid or high-level rogue with me.

gah, fighting mithral golems is quite fun, demiliches not...
i managed to survive 30 rounds or something, gulped a couple of heals just to eat another harm, i think it casted 5 times harm in a row.
some bigbys hand spell got me then, now i wonder: any cool tricks to get this little nasty skull down?
i fought with the holy avenger, divine damage at least, +5 was not high enough to get through the DR.
are there weapons that can penetrate it?
other tips?
(wow, i enjoy getting challenged at last)

For the Golems:
For those who really do not want to go toe to toe with them can handle some pathing properties of the level. Up a floor you should find a Longbow +6 (I hope you can use that).. you should also have a stock of magic arrows (+lightning damage works fine).
Have your henchies hold still at the stairs down, and go forward until you trigger the golems, then run your butt back to the stairway. What I would do is then stand to the right of the right-hand statue and fire at the golems as they ran towards me.. I'd be safe because as soon as they would pass the statues near the stairs, they would be teleported away (then come charging back).
Given time, patience, and a healthy stock of arrows, you should down them without much of a problem. In some cases, standing in this position will get a mithral golem 'stuck' within range of your bow, at which point it's just a matter of picking them off. Keep in mind that chances are only your first attack or two will hit. if you are an arcane caster, True Strike will help a lot if you can time it right.
As for the Demilich:
There is only one way to lay a demilich low: 1 or 2 Summon Monster spells, 5-6 Greater Spell Breaches, immediately followed by Black Blade of Disaster.
Step 1: getting rid of the nasty spells. Cast summons nearby to get the demilich to use up most of his remarkably powerful spells (like Wierd and meteor storm, etc).. be sure to keep yourself and your henchies VERY clear. If you are a caster, letting your familiar draw fire serves the same purpose.
Step 2: Busting up his spell resistance. you will probably need to be hasted and cast as many spell breach spells as you have access to... this is to make him vulnerable to Step 3.
Step 3: Black Blade of Disaster. if this hits, and if you can beat the Demiliches spell resistance, it will force a Fortitude save vs death.. Demiliches have pleasantly crappy fortitude saves (but it can get lucky, mind you)
Step 4: Reload. if you can't get black blade of disaster to 'stick' the lich, you will just have to try again until the rolls run in your favor. The lich is practically immune to everything, including all spells, once the spell breaches wear off (and even with it's SR breached, it will still resist nearly everything in your arsenal), it can melee like the Mithral Golems and has an astronomical armor class.

as mentioned i didnt have any problems with most spells, the DC was quite manageable.
the spell-breach and black blade sound like an interesting idea, i will try this.
i did upgrade my sword, didnt get it that one can add plusses to it though so its just +5
the lich stripped all the damage off with her DR, eventually its +8 or something?
the little holy damage the avenger can do is not enough, thats for sure.
btw, summoning is not a real good option, it had some fear-aura that let my allies run away all the time.
(didnt try it with a henchman)
the only real problematic spells were harm and this bigbys crushing hand (st like this)
any idea where i can get a better weapon? can i return to the drow city and upgrade some other weapon like the holy avenger?
(i would surely miss enserrics life-drain though)

You can use the relic of the reaper to teleport you all over the place, so to speak - it is a good relic.
I would also think you just can take the boat back.
Also the Holy Avenger can be upgraded, yes - personally - I placed perma haste, regeneration +2, true sight and acid extra damage on mine. I did suffer from the measely +5 on occasions, but it was still my main used weapon most of the game.

Keep in mind I was a fighter 12/ Sorcerer 12ish with an enhanced two-bladed sword right around there.. the low sorcer level, even with greater spell penetration and epic spell penetration, meant that no spell would stick, and the attack bonuses were fairly low to even think of hitting the lich. The fear aura also preyed pretty badly on both my henchmen (Deek and the tiefling).
Getting close to the demilich wasn't an option. Even after I whittled down his spell array with summons (notably, Shelgarns' Persistant Blade) and my familiar, he still had enough juice to competely fry my entire party. I laid had to buff up with lesser spell mantle, lay down six hasted Spell Breaches, cast a Greater spell breach from a scroll, save, and cast Black Blade of Disaster from a scroll.. After that, it was about ten rounds before the spell resistance reduction wore off and the black blade vanished, then reload.
The first tmie I fought him, I literally employed every spell scroll, wand, and offensive assault tactic in the book.. playing chicken with summons and trying to find something to harp on his weak fortitude save was the only option left. Man hybrids are so gimped.

i think if you can manage to get a weapon enchanted to +X (whatever DR he has) you can kill him quite easy if your saves are good enough.
one more time i was thankful for my choice of rogue/paladin, evasion and divine grace in combo are a great team.
(i am quite familiar with real DnD as a min/maxer)
due to the limited feat-choices i think paladin/rogue/champion of torm is one of the best melee-combos.
i'll go back to the town and try to get the holy avenger enchanted to some +X, anyhow, i hope there are not many demiliches waiting for me

I was a level 17 wizard/3 arcane archer when i fought the demilich and it was a piece of cake. Just had to cast timestop, greater spell breach and 2 greater missile storms. When the timestop expired the demilich took the damage from those missile storms and was dead before the fight had even started. Didn't even have a problem beating the spell resistance/immunity of that demilich.
Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes!!
