In the recipy book it tells you of what ingredients you need to make a set of armour.
It will tell you that you need a set of magical armour of a total AC.
This total AC is the base AC + the bonus, so if it says total AC of 6, then you need AC 5 + 1 bonus.
A breastplate +3 would give (if memory serves me right) an AC of 8 (5 + 3) - does this match the one you need for crafting?

i am facing a similar problem too. i've saved up some fairy dust and a pair of magical short swords, ad i was thinking of dual wielding feydusters, but he will not let me create a second one, saying that "it won't do". I wonder if it is a bug or something.. i've not tried armor, but i know i can forge a namara rapier as i tried going to him again whe i happened upon a rapier +3..
about the red dragon scale, (highlight) <spoiler>it is supposedly a quest item for boddynock, the sorceror henchman. Ask him for his tale (if u have the Lantanese ring +3, and he will ask to quest for the red dragon scale. Giving it to him will give you a Lantanese ring +4: Cha +4, regen +1 </spoiler>

with regard to magical armor required for forging items, the dwarf will require a suit of armor of base and magical bonus to AC totaling the required AC value. this means that to forge an armor of stated AC 5, u can use any of (and only from) the following list:
1. armor of base AC 1, bonus AC +4 or
2. armor of base AC 2, bonus AC +3 or
3. armor of base AC 3, bonus AC +2 or
4. armor of base AC 4, bonus AC +1
nothing else will work...
as for what "ranger" armor are available in NWN, well.. its hard to say really, as it depends on whether u'r a "melee" or "ranged" ranger. for melee rangers, u'r stuck with nothing more than leather. otherwise, i think u can get hide armor or other medium armors. (i think rangers get medium armor feat?) but basically, it would depend on what u'r fighting. do not hesitate to wear fire protection ones against fire elementals and AC bonus ones against giants etc... so carry a few suits along in a magic bag...

I'm trying to make the Scale of truth the AC is 5 and the breastplate showed it as 5 so I thought it might work
Is there any good armour for my ranger?
As I mentioned - the recipy lists the "total" AC, which is the combined AC from the armour and the magical bonus'.
If you use a breast plate +3 the AC is 5+3 = 8 and thus not totalling an AC of 5, as the recipy proberly says.
For what you can use, check shift's post.

update. i just got reminded of a "mail of speed". its a red breastplate of AC 5, with a +2 AC enchantment and Haste. If u'r not going into dual weapon melee, u can wear this, and take the rapid shot feat for 3 arrows in the first attack!!
don't worry about the Dex limit. it seems that it only limits Dex to AC, but not to ur attack bonus!

i'm not sure if it is according to the ADND3E rules, as i've not touched it for sometime, but i do not recall it being specifically stated as to whether or not it will.
but i belive it is implied that Dex bonus limit is only for AC with the fact that they have armor check penalty (ACP).
and, some may argue that shooting an arrow has less to do with coordination than perception regarding to accuracy of shots, of which the attack bonus is for, so the armor should not. Reason, using a melee weapon requires coordination as well, but better Str means the weapon is easier to handle...

That is correct, for some reason (D&D rules?)
Correct. All the max dex applies to is your AC bonus. In the actual game rules, you still apply your full dexterity bonus to your reflex saves, your dex skills, your To Hit rolls with ranged weapons (and finessed melee weapons), and anything else that isn't your AC.
ADND3E
*nitpicks* It isn't AD&D anymore. When 3rd edition came out, it is called Dungeons and Dragons, not Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
