I have the illithium and the fake. I have one character take the fake to the prat of an artist and another character to wait at the council building with the real thing.
When I see the artist, he says thank you very much and I`ve still got the fake and the guy outside the council building has lost the real thing! What gives? Is this some kind of punishment for fiddling Helm?
I have the Clua number for illithium, so I can still get it, but is there a way to get round this?
Also, has anybody got any idea why, when equiped with Baldurans Shield, there`s a -1 strength penalty?
Cheers

Spoiler
SPOILER
Once you get the fake and try to pass it off to the Artist he gets mad and stomps off. (I had my whole party in the house, though and not separated.) After the little $hit stomps off, head to the Temple. Talk to the head priest. He LOVES the fake mass of metal. Something to the effect of "There is no such thing as absolute purity. The flaw (that set the Artist off) is Helm's way to remind us of this. Blah, Blah, Blah." Then Telwyn feels embarrassed and doesn't tell the High Priest it is a fake and they reward you. (and you get to keep the Real Alloy.)
Come to think of it, I think I left the real stuff in a barrel in Cromwell's district (didn't have enough STR to lug around both pieces.)
Hope this helps

if you have the real it will take that first, no matter who is holding it. Just drop that on the ground if you want him to take the fake.

About the Shield of Balduran: The -1 STR penalty is in the item description. It is basically a game-balancing issue: this shield is extremely powerful so it needs some detriment to offset it.
About the Illithium:

Actually, I find it easier to just get Cromwell to use the real stuff before you hand in the fake stuff to Sarles. Of course, this requires that you get the Mace of Disruption in Ch 3, so if you are trying to do the Sarles quest in Ch 2, my method won't work. In that case, just drop the real stuff on the ground as Mini Me suggests, or better yet put it in a container somewhere for safe keeping.
