Experience cap
Experience cap
I was wondering if it becomes more fun playing without the cap. When your caracters become very powerfull and so on.
After all, you do know that you are cheating, abd how does that affect the game...
I know this is indevidually, but give me some ideas on what you guys think.

I did not play without the cap, but I do think it is a bit lame that your wizards are just 50.000 points away from level 9 spells.
You'd think wizards with level 9 spells are common. I mean just about every wizard you encounter has 'em.
I do wander what would happen to my ranger though, does he get more spells at higher levels. The nine spells I have nog are not nearly enough/ are a bit weeny.

Paladins(kavaliers, undead hunters) and rangers can learn and cast cleric spells.Paladins after lvl 9 and rangers after lvl 8.
My game manual is more informative on paladins:in their table shows that they can cast up to 4th lvl spells and that their maximum casting level is lvl 9.(That means that they can't cast spells higher than lvl 4).
In the ranger table,it shows that they can cast up to lvl 3 spells and their casting level is also considered as lvl 9.The manual doesn't show if rangers can reach 4th lvl cleric spells like paladins-which is strange since they are also considered lvl 9 casters.(Their spell progression in this chart stops in lvl 16,when rangers can reach lvl 17 without removing the XP cap-perhaps this is a problem in my own manual only)
This is the case for cleric spells.I don't know if you were reffering to the stalker ability to cast mage spells -there is no chart about this on my manual.

The answer I was looking for was if you enjoy the game when you use the cap remover, as you can become extremely powerfull, and you know you are cheating. Or does your heart tell you this is wrong?
Just curious...

What I meant was that my Ranger (lvl 17) currently has 9 spell, 3 spells in 1st circle, 3 in second circle en 3 in third circle. The manual says this is the max for the ranger.
But, does the manual mean the max for this level (17). So if I would remove the exp. cap and go on to, say level 20 would I get more spells?

I think that playing without the cap can be fun. Tried it with my Kensai Mage, and it made the game (which is usually dull and annoying) a bit more interesting for two more battles!
Seriously now, I think the cap isn't very important. Although it seems you're limited from getting to 9th level spells, most of them (all who are not Time Stop) aren't very powerful, and are situational enough to be used as scrolls. So, playing w/o the experiance can be fun.

The charts i mentioned above, shows that paladins gain spells up to lvl 20 (not accesible with the XP cap) and rangers up to lvl 16 (below the XP cap).If the tables are correct, rangers can't get any extra spells.Someone having the 2nd edition rule books can be more specific about this matter.
As for what Odin asked,i don't use the XP cap remover,so i can't tell if the game is more fun.I prefer single-class PCs and the remover is not neccessary since i can reach high levels. If you are using a multi class PC then you may want to remove the cap to become more powerful.
If you really want to reach high levels as a multi class (not dual) you should play with less party members or solo. For example a multi 17/19 mage/cleric needs 5,100,100 xp points, which can't be gathered if the xp points are distributed among 6 party members, even if you remove the xp cap.

I thought that the exp cap was pr caracter, and not the whole group. Or am I wrong on this matter?
isnt it 2,900,000 or something pr caracter?

Let'say you have the xp cap.Every character can reach 2,950,000 so with 6 characters you must gather 6*2,950,000=17,700,000 xp points. These are the points you need to gather in the game in order to max out all your characters (assuming they all are single classed)
But a multi class would reach 2,950,000/2= 1,475,000 per class (if he has two classes) or 2,950,000/3=983333 xp (if he has three classes). This happens because both classes are active (unlike dual-classed characters) so the experience you gather is divided.
Let's now say that you remove the xp cap and you need to reach 5,100,000 xp points (like the example above). If you have 6 party members you need to gather 6*5,100,000=30,600,000 xp points in the game.I don't think you can gather so many points playing the game from start to end.
You should play solo or maximum with 17,700,000/5,100,000=3,4--> 3 party members. The last assumption means that you can reach multi 17/19 mage/cleric without the xp cap and using up to two NPCs.

You can get that much, I'm pretty sure of that. With my party (full team), all of them reached their cap by the end of the game, except for Jaheira - she only joined me in Chapter 6 - but she got pretty far anyway.
And even when a character has reached his cap, he still gets experience points assigned. That they are not added to his total is another thing.
So if five characters are at their cap, and one is still running for it, if you kill something the points are distributed as it was in any other case. It isn't so that all points go to the one who hasn't reached his cap yet.

When i wrote that you can't gather so many xp points in the game,i was reffering to 30,600,000 xp points.I have finished the game, with my PC maxed out and i can estimate that there are about 20 million xp points to gather in the game.
The above analysis was made to show what a player who is using a multi class character should do in order to reach high levels.I think that the xp cap remover is more useful to them, since single and dual classed characters can reach relatively high levels.
By the way, what is your rough estimate about the xp points you can gather in the game ?

Is there a point where you are never ambushed anymore?

Just to mention it, the enemy encounters vary on which levels your party members have.
I play a solo swashbuckler6/mage23 and had the exp-cap removed, and in the planar sphere I had to fight one adamantite golem and two iron golems, where it said in the strategy guide, that would be only one iron golem there.
Kind of difficult to measure the exp since you get a heck more exp from random encounters depending on the party's levels.

Later in the afternoon he corrected himself and corrected this:
'All Grecians always say the truth'

I don't know about ambushes but it seems that they won't stop. Perhaps easier (and usually faster) way is to use spell "Gate". It summons a Pit Fiend which will attack anyone who is not protected from evil. Because it actually isn't on your side (red circle around it), you get exp by killing it. 16 000 isn't much but you don't have to do much; cast, kill and rest. I don't remember in what PC lvl clerics get it but it is a 7. level spell, mine got it just before Underdark. It's also a mage spell, lvl 9.
Of course you can summon as many demons you want, but i wrote above "playing the game form start to end".That means to play the game normally with your party from Irenicus prison to Hell, doing as many quests as you can and finish it in a normal amount of time.
There is another thing to be mentioned about xp points. There are two ways of getting experience. The first is when you finish some quests and every party member gets a specific amount of experience. In this case the messages displayed shows something like "Minsc get xxx xp points","Imoen get xxx xp points" etc.
The second case is when you kill a monster and all experience points are divided among your party members.
I was wondering if you play solo and do a quest you get all the amount(6*xxx) of experience for completing this quest? (6 is the number of the party members).Or you just get (xxx) xp points ?
Perhaps someone who plays solo can answer that (like Chris who must have a little above 5 million total xp points according to his character lvls)

When it says 'Minsc gets xxx of experience' then you'll always get this ammount for the quest, independent on how many members are in your group. The more people in the party, the greater is the benefit for you.

Re: I got a question for you, Maurice.
What would happen if we imagine Archimedes beeing the one guy in the riddle with the two brothers?
The riddle with the two brothers goes this way:
" There was a street crossing with two brothers standing there, of which one of them always has to lie, and the other always has to say the truth. You may ask only one question to only one brother of your choice. What would be the right question ? "
I want to give the right answer to this riddle right away now: The right question is 'What would your brother say if I asked him about the right way?' In both cases if you ask one brother or the other, you'll always get the same answer, and by choosing the other way you know which it is.
Back to Archimedes: He had said, for instance, that all Grecians always say the truth.
Now imagine Archimedes taking the place of the one brother in the riddle, who always has to lie.
And we ask Archimedes the question: 'What would you say, if I ask you, if all Grecians always say the truth?'
Right on, you guessed well.
The Answer of Archimedes statet: 'All Grecian always say the truth !!!!'

Actually, I know this in a different form.
"An explorer in dark Africa loses his bearings in the jungle, and is frantically looking for a way back. He knows there are two tribes in the jungle, one of whom the people always lie, and who are cannibals, while the other tribe always speaks the truth, and is friendly to outsiders. While searching, he stumbles across a cannibal war party, and he runs for his life. With the war party close on his tail, he comes to a fork in the road, where he finds one character standing. Not knowing to which tribe he belongs, and with only time enough to ask ONE question, what is his question?"
Well, the answer is "What's the way to YOUR village". In both versions of the riddle, the conclusion is one and the same: "I always speak the truth" is always true.
