tomes that improve abilities?

Post by chimpmaster »

Hi all,

This question is related to BG1 in the first instance, but it is really a BG2 question and I figure there will be more people browsing this forum who might know the answer.

With regards to tomes that improve abilities (eg strength, intelligence, wisdom) - of which I have found 3 so far in BG1...

If i use these on NPC's who will be in BG2, such as minsc or Jaheira, will the game import their new abilities? If not these would be wasted and I should jmust use them on myself right?

Yes, just use them on yourself :)
There are ways, I think, of importing your entire game into SoA/ToB but I'm not a techie, so if you want to do that you'll need the help of somebody like UserUnfriendly ;)

Thanks dragon wench, much appreciated.

From memory you can import from a save game or a character file, but either way you would start SOA alone, in the room with misc, jaheira and imoen.

This would indicate to me that they will be predetermined and unrelated to anything you did with/to them in bg1.

If there is a work around, it wouldnt be a "standard" one, so to speak, as you say.

I havent played with mods or any variation files to date yet, and whats more Im on a mac, which means a lot of the modifications etc wont work for me.

Thanks anyway, i can free up 3 of my inventory slots now :)

Well..

On complete playthroughs, I have given stat tomes to NPCs, and no they aren't reflected in BG2 - so I used Shadow keeper to adjust their stats as modified in BG1. Easy peasy
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

you COULD download BGT which converts BG1 into BG2 and links all the files together. This allows tome abilites to carry over.

I dont know if the same applies for BG1TuTu

import tomes

I noticed that the tomes still exist if you import them into the BG2, from your saved char/game in BG1. Instead of using them on your character, save the books in your inventory. When you import the char into BG2, drop them on the ground before Irenicus starts the movie, and you can then give them to any character you want. Don't waste the 3 wisdom books on your fighter, wait till you get Aerie, and it'll give her a major spell boost, not to mention the int. book, which lets her memorize more spells too.

Swordforthelord...

Good point.

I noticed that Imoen's intelligence is 17, which would mean it needs to be raised if she is ever to learn level 9 or 10 spells right?

That was never implemented, the only downside is that a lower inteliigence lets you memorize fewer spells (potions take care of that) and that you fail to scribe more often (potions take care of that).

Chip...

Yes, Imoen would benefit from an int. boost. Depending on the char you plan to play in TOB, I bring across the tomes that will benefit the players I choose to end the game with. Usually, I choose Aerie if I'm a fighter, or Minsc/Korgan if I'm a caster or theif. So, importing the strenth/dex tomes for them is more important.
