Can you play the game through WITHOUT becoming a jedi?

You guys might think this question is crazy, as becoming a jedi is so cool, but having played it through a few times now...

Is it possible to not become a jedi and play it through as a soldier or rogue, for example?

You could become really skilled with heavy blasters and rifles, wear cool armour and there is be some good stuff out their like the FETT kit.

I just thought it would be a really fun role playing experience running through this without being a jedi. Perhaps it would make some of the encounters with other jedi impossible though - you could still have the other jedi backing you up though I guess.

Just a thought....

You simply have no other choice, at that point. Other planets are "unlocked" only after the whole starmap plot thread begins.

Hmmm, I have no idea if this would work, and would probably be extremely tedious to try, but, if you hung around on Taris killing everything, such as respawning monsters, and got to level 20 scounrel/scout/soldier, then would the game let you level up, given that the maximum level you can be is a cumulative 20?

I think the best think you could do would be to 'imitate' a non Jedi, such as by only using vibrobldes and blasters, and never using Force powers, etc.

Hmmm, maybe if you reach lvl 20 before getting to be a Jedi the game allows you to pass the lvl 20 cap, cause you need a mandatory Jedi level. The question would be if the game would allow you to keep leveling, stop at 21, or just crash completely. Most probably there is a lvl 19 cap to the non-jedi PC. It would be a very long experiment though. Well, if anyone is as crazy as to spend 20 hours killing rakghouls they certainly deserve it, should this yield positive results.

well a final comment

Just as a final note on this thread, I think its a real shame that you must become a jedi to play this game through.

It would have added a little bit of extra role playing capacity and replayability to be able to play it through as a soldier or a scoundrel, for example.

I know for sure that if and when they release a MMORPG or other rpg for mac or xbox that is based on the star wars world, I would be just as keen to learn to play as a bounty hunter as I would a jedi or sith.

I was one of those guys barracking for Jango Fett in Episode 2 - i just couldnt help it I thought he was fabulous. I was MOST disappointed when Mace Windu disposed of him so easily.

Bobba is destined for some revenge in episode 3 surely....

I happened to have a saved game just before becoming a jedi so I enabled cheats and used addlevel to reach level 20 Scout. Then went to talk to the Jedi Council and chose to be a Guardian and here's what happened: I became a level 20 Scout, level 0 (yes, zero) Jedi Guardian. Since you can't level up, you don't gain the lightsaber proficiency and can't use the lightsaber you just built...pretty stupid. If I recall well there is a piece of equipment (implant, googles, gloves, i don't remember) that grants lightsaber proficiency so it might be possible to use them later on. Bottom line: people will recognize you as a Jedi and treat you accordingly but you won't be able to force push a cotton ball thru a waxed floor.

That is just a flaw in the game really.

The point here (for me at least) is more of a possibility than an actuality, but it would be interesting to play the game through as a non jedi class.

It's not a flaw--remember, he enabled cheats, which meant he did play the game the way it was intended. An analogy could be made to a person who tries to use a car's engine as a stove, and then tries to return it because it doesn't function efficiently.

KotoR is quite linear in a number of respects, and one of these is the professional path you *must* take to victory. Whereas you can win the BG and IWD series with any mix of professions (and that goes for your personal PC in BG 1/2, as well), you have very little leeway in KotoR. You have to become a jedi and accept force powers. Of course, as it's been said before in this forum, no one demands that you use 'em. If anything, playing a game without force powers on your side (not just your character) might restore some real challenge against the braindead AI and all the hapless foes you regularly face.

Could you use cheats to 'warp' from Taris to any of the other planets? Go around finding star maps etc, without ever visiting Dantooine and the council.

I wonder if the Rakata would still let you into the temple?

You can, yes, but the Rakata letting you into the temple will be the least of your worries. Your game will break in half long before you get to that stage.

The one thing I can't understand in all of this is why the hell would you NOT want to become a Jedi? I've passed this game four times and the thing that constantly bugs me is how to play the game as a Jedi from the start without using the warp cheat.

well...playing the game as a non force sensitive is different...a new history, i dont think its more difficult...the first time i playes i was a soldier/guardian and with each strike on malak i take him like 100vp
but, as rakatan said, only force sensitive can enter the temple

Because the game is a no-brainer when you have Jedi (tm) powers at your disposal. Of course, you can also foreswear using 'em, or go on quests without any party members; but some people just want to max out melee, and to hell with everything else.

You could also use a savegame editor to change your class back to a non-Jedi after you're done with Dantooine.
