I've just started BG2 again as a mage, I choose find familiar as one of my spells. I cast this spell directly after meeting and turning down Yoshimo in Irenicus Dungeon 2. I put my familiar in my backpack straight away.
I then completed the dungeon and moved to Wakueens Promenade, watched the cut-scene, got the 30,000 exp. each. I then got my familiar out of my backpack for it to appear back in Irenicus dungeon Lvl 2 by itself. So I took the little beggar outside and was treated to the cutscene again and another 30,000 exp points.
