Game crashes when I kill Balor - HELP

Post by calinpearce »

You can imagine my frustration. I am two fights away from completing the game. Kill Balor in the Fire Elemental node and then the fungus Queen herself. The problem is everytime I land the death blow against the accursed fire demon the game crashes ( I dont mean freezes. It shuts down completely). The only other way I can kill Zuggtmoy (and not banish her for 66 years) is to destroy the skull. Guess what I have the same problem as others on this forum. I can't get hold of a masterwork maul. AHHHHHHHHHH

Please help. Is there a patch that will solve this. I have downloaded one already and it has not helped. The same problem arises when I try and use the chain lightning rod. Could they be related?

Pentium 4 3.06GHz, 512MB DDR-SDRAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 128MB video memory. I downloaded the patch from this site - is that the atari patch?. I think thats everything! I have only had my PC for one month so I am not very literate when it comes to computer terminology. I hope that the second patch resolves this problem cause i'm pulling my frigging hair out!!

You might try upgrading your video card drivers goto: http://www.nvidia.com and click the 'download' drivers link and get the latest ones. If you just got the PC wherever you bought it from may or may not have installed the latest drivers. They may have only used the ones that came with the Video card or with windows.

Thanks I will try that. I don't have broadband so it will probably take a few hours to download! I will let you know if it works.

Other things you can look at updating if that does not work:
Run windows update and get all critical updates as well check the recommended updates and see if it its recommending Direct x 9.0b (you might not have it)
Also look at updating your soundcard drivers.

I can't help you with your game crash, but if it's a Masterwork Maul that you are after, you can purchase one from Brother Smyth, at the blacksmith in Hommlet for 305gp.

Thanks. He has only ever had normal mauls for sale in the past but I will try him again as it must be random?
I have now updated my drivers for my graphics card and the game still crashes when I kill Balor. I guess its not my destiny to kill him. Even though I haven't killed Balor, I thought I would go a give Zuggtmoy a good kicking anyway. I haven't destroyed the skull or collected all the elemental nodes so I thought I would just banish her. To my surprise I killed her totally. She wasn't that hard to kill - two rounds of combat with my fighter was all she could take!
I have now started an EVIL party - maybee they will have better luck with Balor!

I don't think that it is random as I have purchased many masterwork items from him and I always get that option. I'm playing CG w/cleric/fighter/rouge & wiz. No matter which of my party member does the talking the option is always there and frankly I was abit amazed to find it there in the dialog options myself. I don't recall it being there any of the other times I came through when I was of a different alignment. So maybe it has to do with the alignment??

Did you not find the one in the chest in DL-1? The room is all the way down on the bottom extreme left in the relatively small room where gouls or ghast are/were... it actually can be very easy to miss this room, there are some other mastwork items in the chest as well. And if you haven't angered the "traders" in Hommlet, they also sell one, but I forget how much it costs, most likely the same.

Hope this helps! Have fun!

Also playing as CG Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, Sorcerer and Rogue. Also Melany, the wandering bard (whats his name?!!) and some fighter in found in one of the nodes (can't remember his name either). I don't remember collecting the masterwork mace on Dugeon level one. I must have sold it, cause its not there now. The traders wont talk to me - seem to be holding a grudge cause I told on them - come on guys forgive and forget! Brother Smyth is not selling me any masterwork items at all. he must like you! Can't buy one in Nulb either. I have given up for now. Zuggtmoy was easy enough to beat without needing to weaken her by destroying the skull.
Thanks for the help.

I'm sorry... I must have been suffering from a major brain cramp! Brain function must be in tune with gameplay during a heated battle... "Duh..." she says *while hitting her forehaead with open palm*

It just dawned on me that the reason I can purchase masterwork items from the smitty now, is because we recently installed the Co8 patch which makes this posible. So naturally if you haven't... you won't be able to get the dialog option to buy them there.

I do apologize for the confusion. :(

Ah - that would explain it. Co8 Patch? I don't think I have downloaded that one. I don't suppose you can remember where you downloaded it from? It could fix a few other problems I have had with the game - that should prevent me from pulling out any more of my hair in frustration!!

Will installing the Co8 Patch affect games already in play in other words do I have to start over? I am having the same Balor crash issues and I am running a AMD system.
I'd buy that for a dollar!

Regarding crashes

The game crashes from time to time on my system when i fight the fire node. All other nodes are okay but slow, but then again i have P3 600 with 768 MB RAM and a very good old G-Force 2 Ultra Pro with 64 MB RAM. As for Sound, the music (very monotheous) of TOEE makes me fall asleep in 5 minutes so i turn it OFF.(Helps performance) With this crappy old shait i have run through the game 8 times.

You dont need to kill the BALOR, nor do you need to destroy the skull (Zuggey is to weak to make a challenge if you destroy the skull, after all she is the end boss!!)

The Balor and all of the FIRE NODE is by far the most challenging part of the game. If at first you dont succed, kill the other bosses then head for THE DEMON QUEEN using the power of the node gems for an easy kill.

Balor : Try using only one tank with STONESKIN, HASTE, PROT:EVIL and/or both power swords FRAGARACH/SCATHER
and have the rest of your party close up for cures and backup.

Game crashed 8/10 when i ran into him with all my forces, simply to much for my old system to cope with.

Destroying the skull : NOT IMPORTANT but still : AT dungeon LVL 1
in one of the barrels is the MASTERWORK MAUL. AT dungeon LVL 3 is another of the four items you need.(close to the hag i believe)

Fireball scroll : if you have shown the skull tu BURNE in HOMLET and don't have a spellcaster capable of producing a FIREBALL scroll, you cant destroy it.

If yopu install the CO8 patch, the Smith in HOMLET sells masterwork copies of every weapon and armor/shield in the game. Their latest patch works with TROIKAS Official Patch. Great if you like to enchant your own stuff/evil stuff.
 Oh, When all else fail, put the Dwarf up front!

I went to the atari website temple help file and found out you can keep the game from crashing by making sure there are no 3rd party apps running i am going to try and place a link to that page
http://www.atarisupport.com/newfaq/dung ... prodissues
hope this helps I know it took care of my crash problem :D
I'd buy that for a dollar!
