If I undertand you rightly, the only NPC quest you get experience and items for completing without that NPC being in your party is the Planar Sphere. You must have Valygar in your party to open the door of the ship, but then you can dismiss the ranger back to the hills, and forget about him.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Take Mazzi for last; first take the other NPC and do their quest, for some of them you don't even need to have'em full time in the party (see a previous thread on the subject), and only when you have done the other NPC quest take with you Mazzi: as long as you don't let her join the party, her Exp. will raise according with your own, so she wan't lag behind when you finally will ask her to join.

*planar sphere spoiler*
It's actually not *really* necessary to have Valygar in your party to do the planar sphere, you can just have his body.
And you can of course swap party members in and out of your party if you want to complete other NPC quests. The only problem might be if you're romancing Viconia - kicking her out of the problem would terminate the romance and she may not come back.

Duriong their NPC quests, both Nalia and Jan will leave your party for a while. During this time you could pick up other party members and do their quests. Haer'Dalis, Keldorn, Korgan, and Valygar have quests that can be done immediately upon aquiring them. Also, Cernd has a quick quest, but you must complete the Trademeet ones first.

for planar sphere, you only need to have him open the door to the sphere, then kick him out if you want.
uhmm well you do not need him if you just kill him the first time ytou meet him and look at his stuff there is "valygar's body", pick it up and then just open planar sphere and drop him on the ground
You only need valygar to open the door, he doesn't need top be in good health
