I have to say that games like KOTOR are a double edged sword. I don't get to play a lot of PC games, so I don't know if there are more games out there like this that haven't made it to the consoles, but as far as the story and character creation go, I am ruined for other games. Unless I can create my own character and have a say in his decisions, I just don't care that much anymore. Granted, I was never a huge action game player before, but after the personalized story in KOTOR and the vast options of Morrowind, I am even more selective in what I am willing to play. Take Jedi academy, for example. Where last year I would have been thrilled to find a realtime lightsabre combat game with RPG elements, this year I am let down by the limited options (a few OK humans and some Fugly aliens, all with predictable abilities). Also, Deus Ex 2. The dialogue options given were more than usual, by I never really felt immersed in that world.
I guess what I'm saying is that, while I'm greatful for extraordinary games like KOTOR, they make other games look that much more ordinary. Which leaves about 4 games in my inventory. At least until fable comes out.
I'm ruined.
I'm ruined.

Play some older ones. Like the best cRPG's ever - Baldur's Gate 2 (with expansion) and Fallout 2. Also try Neverwinter Nights - more recent, more hack and slash, but still more choices for character creation and interaction than most. Deus Ex was not really an RPG, just had some elements. I have yet to play Deus Ex 2, but I'm looking forward to it because I loved the first one. Whatever floats your boat, though.

The Dark Alliance 2 game is what you're referring to, I take it. Haven't played it, but read some reviews, which state that it's pretty good, but still hack and slash and there's little actual roleplaying in it.
Baldur's Gate 2, on the other hand (even though it doesn't follow 3rd edition rules like Neverwinter Nights or Icewind Dale; it's somewhat edition 2.5), is singlehandedly the best written, longest, most compelling RPG. KotOR (also based on 3ed D&D, albeit modified) pales in the comparison as far as the characters (both creation and NPC), storyline, sheer amount of sidequests and freedom are concerned. Seriously.

Divine Divinity also has a wide-open character creation scheme, allowing you to develop your character from next to nothing in any of several dozen skills you want. Similarly, King of Dragon Pass lets you develop your clan (which you lead strategically) in any direction you want.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
I knew I was forgetting something Torment is an awesome game, but it's also for the hardcore role-player. i.e. there's little fighting and TONS of text. For me, that's good, but for most people, it's actually boring. Too bad, cause the story was outright awesome.Originally posted by Armisael
If you enjoyed the story elements in KOTOR, see if you can dig up a copy of Planescape: Torment. Probably the most compelling story in any game ever, and you still get to build the persona of the protagonist.

Bah, I won't even speak to anyone who discounted Torment because of the dialog.
Divine Divinity is actually a pretty decent game, but if you're a nigh-on-fanatical RPG fellow like me it's probably too much action and too little RPG. Better than Diablo, though. I haven't actually played Dark Alliance, so I can't draw a comparison where that's concerned.
