I think it depends on which version you are playing. I know in HotU I was able to get my stats to 13 or 14 sometimes. That was using items and spells. Wearing bracers of dex +7 and casting cat's grace I got my dex up to 36 the last time I played as a ranger.
What are you using to boost your DEX? I just looked at my character and he had a natural DEX of 24. He was wearing Dragon Slippers for an extra 2 and bracers of dexterity +7 to make 35. Casting Cat's Grace gave me 36. Try that combination at least and see if it doesn't work out.
Your combination adds up to +12 also... Will cat's grace ever take it above 36? I think I have Deathslayer(+3), some Dex bracers (+3), Belt of Agility (+4) and some boots that give +2, which makes +12. Putting on some +4 boots and/or casting Cat's Grace don't raise it any higher.
Actually, a dex of 36 does give you a modifier of 13. I'm not sure if it was that specific combination of items or not. Cat's Grace theoretically should give you between 1 and 4 bonus to dex, but it may be that over 12 you can only get one more point, no matter what you roll. Another possibility is that the dragon slippers allow you to get over 12 because the dex bonus is an enhancement bonus. I'm not an expert on D&D rules, though. I just know I have seen my modifier hit 13 and 14 from time to time.
i've read somewhere that there is a cap at +12 bonus to everything. including AC[type]. u can still add more to Dex beyond 36 through use of items. supposedly i've read in bioware forums that there is a cap of +10 on natural bonus from stat, meaning that PrC and level up stat to an attribute will not give bonus to anything more than 30(+10), but there is a +12 bonus from magic or something like that.
Maybe I'm just really bad at math, but I've checked several times, even with a calculator, and I can't get 24 + 12 to equal anything other than 36... Am I missing something? Are we talking about the same thing? I'm referring to the modifier on the stat score, not the bonus granted by the stat.
24 + 12 does equal 36, but check the manual, page 39 of the gold edition. 34 - 35 gives a +12 modifier and 36 - 37 gives a +13 modifier. According to the manual, you can reach 40 - 41, which gives you a +15 modifier.
maybe we're not talking about the same thing. we generally use a +x to indicate a stat modifier. so i may have confused your post if you are using it to indicate additional points to a stat. i am talking about stat bonus modifiers, not the stat point increases.
Yes, I understand that the Dexterity modifier can be much higher than +12. Sorry for the confusion, I meant stat point increases. Anyway, I can't get it to go higher than 12. So, now that that's all cleared up, any thought?
Oh, duh. Allright, so Dragon Slippers give +2, bracers of dex +7 makes 9 and Cat's Grace should potentially be able to push it to 13 with the max roll. I'll play around in the toolset and see if I can get some combo to stack higher than 12. shift244 may be right about the cap, though.
Ok, after giving myself the belt of agility +10, bracers of dexterity +10, the shroud of kings (+2), and the dragon slippers (+2) and casting cat's grace, I still was only able to get to 36. It seems that shift244 is right that there is a cap and that spell boosts are included in that as well. Sorry for all the confusion.
