Favorite NPCs (and least favorites, too)
Didn't see this thread in my search results, but I was looking to get some opinions on your favorite and least favorite NPCs - and why.
I am curious more in terms of dialogue and interactions and fun rather than usefulness, since my party is capable on it's own. I just felt like taking some fodder... er, I mean, people - into the Temple with me this time around.
I know looting's a big issue, and some loot more than others, but I'm really more interested in flavor than anything else.
Of course, any and all feedback is great.
Thanks!

Choosing NPC's
Like so much else, when Atari put such a drastic cap on text, it eliminated most of the fun that NPC's might've offered. The way they ended up, they add nothing to the enjoyment of the game at all.
They volunteer no remarks at all, EVER. You can't get useful conversation from them, by TALKING at them, either. So assuming your party has the gonads to forego Elmo and/or his brother, then just forget all the rest of the worthless lot!

What's this about getting Mother Screng and her daughter in your party?? I certainly don't remember having the option to have them join....I do remember thinking the daughter was hiding something upstairs, but all dialogue options with her ended in her telling me to leave (or choosing to attack her). I was a CN party though, maybe that plays a role.....
To Dungeon Master: I think I remember hearing that the NPC that joins you after you buy her freedom from Mona the gypsy can be told that she is your slave, resulting in her taking no loot. I haven't confirmed this though.

It's tricky to get them in your party. First you have to have Otis in your party. Take him to the temple so he can see that things are happening there. I am not sure exactly what he needs to see. Go back to Nulb. Otis will leave. Talk to him again. I think you must be of good alignment because this did not work with my neutral party but did with my good one. Otis will rejoin you and say that you need more help and should talk with Mother Screng. Go talk to her and say that Otis sent you. You must have room for her and her daughter and be below a certain level (I forget if it is 6 or 7). They will then join your party. Don't go back to Nulb if you want to keep them. Talk to them again when they are in your party. Mother Screng is a level 9 cleric. Her daughter is a level 4 fighter.
Spugnoir the wizard will only take wizard scrolls.
Elmo only take gold and not very much.
The coin stacks of the marryable Npc's ( Fruella, Melany, Bertram ) can be dragged into your inventory on a regular basis. Just give them some heavy and or useless items ( unsellable ) first.
All other Npc's inventory can be filled with junk to prevent looting, they still take gold but it drops on the ground at their feet for you to pick up later.
Hope this helps.

i steal everybody's money, such as wonnilon who i recently killed for sucking horrendously. i am chaotic good but should definetly be chaotic evil, my solution to any problems are usually "kill them", as in one of the following circumstances:
no reward for quest? kill them
done with their quests? kill them
uniteresting dialogue options? kill them
look powerful? kill them
annoying voice? kill them
bad npc who joined me? they have an accident
npc w/ good weapons to sell? kill them
good npc who i have had for a while? kill them
scorpp? kill him
npc takes loot i want 3 times? (such as the masterwork maul)kill them
option to negotiate? 1st negotiate, then once convo is over, kill them
living at the wrong place/time? kill them
no reward for quest? kill them

It's been a while...
After helping with Mulligan's Power of NPCs thread for a while, I can actually answer my own question, having spent a great deal of time with almost all of the NPCs (I even leveled up some that mull already had)...
I think my favorite NPC is Zaxis - and I have been the biggest bard-basher in the history of CRPGs and PnP RPGs - but in this game, he has good stats, made me laugh (he comments through song about lots of stuff), and he is a nice add-on to a well-rounded party - very versatile. Plus, as mentioned by Kalendraf, bards are fairly powerful in ToEE.
If I wasn't busy bashing bards, I was probably hurling epithets at the druids, and yet my 2nd favorite NPC is Meleny. Maybe she's my Jaheira in the game, but I have grown attached to her. If it weren't for her low wisdom ruining high level spellcasting, she'd be my #1 NPC. Similarly, Kella can pack a wallop with her spells, but since she's so deep in the temple, and has that annoying voice, she only serves to highlight how great Meleny should have been.
Sticking with my theme of about-faces, I think the third best NPC is Wicked or Riana. Odd, because rogues are not critical to ToEE, and I've often pointed it out myself. But there was something simple and pure to them - I enjoyed dressing them in studded leather, with a red cloak, leather helm, and shortbow. Either looked very sinister, and even if not needed, looked cool.
As a runner-up for 3rd, I think Lareth was great. He's the only cleric (unless there's a Node NPC who is a cleric) other than Paida (useless as a cleric), and it was great watching him cripple the enemy with various inflict spells. Obviously there are some plot and alignment limitations, but he was great while he lasted.
Lastly, silly though it sounds, I liked Ted, Ed, and Ed. Just simple fighters. I gave them all gloves of +6 strength, amulets of +6 health, rings of protection, bracers of armor, platemail, red cloaks, helmets and longbows - and voila! - a hardened core of archers to pick at my foes from afar.
Of course, you can look them all up in Mulligan's thread:

party of four
Hey Silverdragon,
reading your various posts, it seems like we think the same about the game so far. I play with a party of four, taking NPCs for a little while in general, then drop them. I think the looting factor is normal, and I think I would loot a lot myself if I was an NPC.
Anyway, since I only use the items I craft, it makes no big difference to me.
I like Oohlgrist, because of what he sounds like when he hits. But he is overly too powerful, so I don't keep him for long.
My party of four will be at tenth level:
female half-orc bard 4 / barbarian 10 using greatsword
male human ranger 5 / druid 5 using two weapons
male human cleric of hextor 10 using flail
male human wizard 10 using glaive
It's fun to have a female half orc with 16 CHA....
Try playing 4 PCs with no NPCs: makes levelling faster and some encounters tougher. Watch out for paralysis!!
Peace
