The Power Of NPC'S

Post by Mulligan »

I simply love this game, cause it can be played with a party of
spellcasters OR a party of fighters, depending of which npc's the player chooses.

I will continue to add Npc's listings to this thread.

First out is a devious couple, best chosen for Evil-Aligned Pc's :

Turoko, male human monk lvl 3 alignment Lawful Ewil
Kobort, male human fighter lvl 2 alignment Neutral

Theese are a couple, recrutable from the inn in Homlet if :

You have 4 or fever Pc's,
Your Pc's doesn't include a Paladin,
Party Alignment IS NOT LAWFUL EVIL

You have to take them both, if one of them dies the other will leave after combat ends.

This are the statistics for them both :

Kobort
Human Male Fighter Lvl 2 :
Will level up as Barbarian for total of F2/Brb8
Alignment : True Neutral
Hit Points : 22

Stats:
STR 18 +4, DEX 16 +3, CON 17 +3, INT 6 -2, WIS 8 -1, CHA 11 +0

Skills:
Listen 1, Search 1, Spot 1, Tumble 0.
Increases Spot & Tumble to 6.5

Feats:
Standard Ftr Profs., Cleave, Combat Reflexes. Adds Standard Barbarian abilities ONLY.

Positive:
Early heavy hitter with cleave for free, good hit points at lvl 2: 22
Good Offensive stats in early game.

Negative:
No add. feats, no stat increase, weak skill boost, weak at mid through end game + leaves if Turoko dies.

Turoko
Human Male Monk Lvl 3
Will level up as Monk for total of Monk 10
Alignment : Lawful Evil
Hit Points : 11

Stats:
STR 15 +2, DEX 15 +2, CON 11 +0, INT 9 -1, WIS 15 +2, CHA 5 -3

Skills:
Hide 4, Listen 5, Move Silent 4, Spot 2, Tumble 3
Increses these to 7 by lvl 10

Feats:
Standard Monk Profs., Dodge, Improved Initiative. Adds Improved Trip at lvl 6 and Monk abilities ONLY.

Positive:
Good early scout & second combatant if party does not include Rouge, good skill boost.

Negative:
No add. feats, no stat boost, weak Con score, low fighter stats.
Leaves if Kobort dies.

Conclusion:
Theese guys are weak when together, you'll have to keep them both alive and well fed. Best used as fodder in early game, if used at all. Both will loot extensivelie, and Turoko won't EVER gain usefulness except as a scout.

Hope this is of use for some of you out there !

More Npc's : Furnok

Next up is :

Furnok, Human male Rouge lvl 4
Alignment: True Neutral - goes with everybody !!
will level up as Rouge to lvl 10 for Rouge 10.
Hit points : 25

Stats:

STR : -1 (8)
DEX : +4 (18)
CON : +2 (15)
INT : +2 (14)
WIS : 0 (10)
CHA : +1 (13)

Starts with DODGE + TOUGHNESS + IMPROVED INITIATIVE
Will gain SKILL FOCUS ( MOVE SILENTLY ) at Lvl 9
Will gain SKILL MASTERY (SPECIAL ROUGE ABILITY) at Lvl 10 with theese skills : DIPLOMACY (no use) INTIMIDATE (no use) SLEIGTH OF HAND (no use) + maybe MOVE SILENTLY (useful)

Skills:

Bluff 7
Disable Device 7
Hide 7
Listen 7
Move Silently 7
Open Lock 7
Search 7
Sense Motive 7
Spot 7
Use Magic Device 7

at Lvl 10 his DEX increases to +6 (22/23) Impossible !!

Positive :

Early on he is a good SNEAK ATTACKER, despite his poor fighting skills. If you don't include a ROUGE in your party ( you do NOT need one), Furnok is all the Thief you need. A +4 boost to DEX at Lvl 10 is handy, use him for RANGED ATTACKS in late game. He is the ultimate scout.

Negative :

He has a lot of hp - in the beginning, later on he is weak.
There isn't any traps for him to find or any locks to open. (Knock spell rules all chests, some of whoose DC is over 30, no rouge can EVER pick those !)
He can dish out a lot of damage if he hits with a sneak attack, which he never does, due to his weak Strenght Score.

Conclusion:

He adds flavour to the game if you don't have a rouge in your party, - PERIOD. He is a THIEF, he steals all the valuable goods from all chests before you can have a look at what's inside. You can bypass this with careful planning, however. I recomend to use him early, dismiss him when you dont need him and re-add him whenever you need his skills.

Re: Raumoheru

Thanks for the answer, that could be it

I only tried Paladin the first time i played but i felt my game options vere to few. The rest of the party vere low on CHA scores and Social skills so i used the Paladin as the spokesman most times.

However, upon accepting any of the Temple Quests, even with another PC doing the speaking, he would immediately Fall.

Btw, this was without any patches installed.

Do you feel the paladin class is worth it in this game ?

paladins are great warriors and a good party leader or spokesperson. their spells do not help very much but are still handy. paladins get special abilities so u got make a choice: have a fighter with more feats or paladin with special abilities. i think they are worth it if u are a good party

Re: Paladins

Yes i agree!

My Pal Whomped everyone with the Holy Sword the first time + the Xp gained for the temple quests is rather low...and i didn know of the power swords Fragarach & Scather then. They are simply too strong, but sure fun to play with.

Maybe it's time to try Lawful Good again, and include a monk ?, i haven't tried monk to lvl 10 yet.

I whish there'd be more options for Paladins though, i love to include Paladins in PnP D&D, especially with some perks like greed or jealousy.

If you havent read it try "The Deeds Of Paksenarrion" by Elizabeth Moon. Great Paladin Triology... :) :) :)

I noticed that my party paladin fell even when she did not do the drinking - but it doesn't really matter becasue for 2000 gp, Terjon will absolve your paladin regardless of their crimes and how many times he/she commits them!

Just have a fallen paladin initiate conversation with Terjon and he'll ask for the cash and remove the paladin's fallen status.

Kill 'em all - and then repent, I say!

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on your post...

BTW - great post - very informative - seems like you're playing all the NPCs up to maximum level just to see how they advance in levels - wow - and I thought I loved this game!

:p

Anyway, just a crazy aside:

We all know how the NPCs loot and get to barter before we do (as if we are 2nd class citizens or something), but here's the worst insult of all: I had my dead (-10 hp) "wife," Fruella, with me, and guess what: the merchants will actually barter with her before my PC party members!

Good lord, man - she's dead!

Just too horrible to be believed - and I had been using her to tote gems and jewelry, so I had to buy it all back.

Not at all, i had hoped others would contibute to the thread :)

Check out Co8's latest patch, it totally fixes looting issues.

Strang that about Fruella though, but you can drag all items from a dead Npc to a Pc, thats how i got both Fragarach & Scather.

When i play Fruella i give her all items of one sort, i.e black leather gloves & boots or all gems and visit the corresponding merchant. The highest Apr-score in the party is used for bartering and afterwards i simply drag all her coins into MY inventory.

This speeds up bartering quite a bit and since she's my wife it's only fair that i control her money, hmm ?

Let's give a moment of praise to the Co8 team. :) :) :)

I've always had version 2.0 - having read your other post on looting just now, I guess the patch only alleviates some looting, but doesn't stop it entirely - and my Fruella thing still happened.

No biggie, really.

Oh...

Imagine what i've gone through, filling my npc's inventory with all kinds of junk to prevent looting. Ugh, me feel like stupid orc.

I got the C08 patch ver 1 early but didn't think to check for updates until now , aaarghh, anyway, now the explorations of the npc's can truly begin.

Whats to say, guess it's hard to be a Pc-gamer theese days...

BTW, greatly inspired by your 4 Ftr's/1 Wiz party i'm running through with a 5 clerics build now. Haven't had to heal yet, level 7 and mopping up Temple lvl 3. Very entertaining opening locked chests with a cleric.

Onwards, for Glory ! :) :) :)
