IMO, the essentials are:

Level 1: Magic Missile, Shield, Ice Dagger

Level 2: Mirror Image, Horror, Melf's Acid Arrow

Level 3: Stinking Cloud, Flame Arrow, Skull Trap

Level 4: Stoneskin, Emotion: Hope, Ice Storm

Level 5: Animate Dead, Chaos, Lower Resistance

Level 6: Acid Storm, Improved Haste

Level 7: Mordenkainen's Sword, Banishment, Finger of Death

Level 8: Horrid Wilting, Symbol of Hopelessness

If you're soloing, you'll want several other spells, like Protection from Evil and Knock. I have a definite preference for crowd-control and necromantic spells, with some elemental spells thrown in. Animate Dead is the best summoning spell in the game, and Mordenkainen's Sword is one of the most powerful weapons in the game.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Generally agreeing with Sojurner, with some changes:

Level 1: sleep (for early game use, the wasted slot won’t matter later anyway), magic missile, chromatic orb, shield

Level 2: mirror image, web, eagle’s splendor (you can make your spells harder to resist AND get a discount in a store – why not do it?), melf’s acid arrow

Level 3: haste, fireball, invisibility sphere

Level 4: stoneskin, improved invisibility, malison

Level 5: complete agreement with Sojurner here

Level 6: improved haste, chain lightning

Level 7: delayed blast fireball, finger of death, mass invisibility

Level 8: Again, agreeing with Sojurner

My sorcerer focuses on crowd control early in the game, keeping the enemies at bay. Later on, he acquires the tasks of (1) blasting them to shreds, with complete set of feats for the job (Greater Spell Focus: Evocation, Spirit of Flame) and (2) buffing up team members. He maintains those three roles throughout the game, casting most of infrequently used spells from scrolls (mordenkainen’s sword, tenser’s transformation, high-level protection spells)
