Is your character a reflection of you

Post by dragon wench »

The vanity thread got me to thinking about this. So how many people here have characters that are an extension of their actual, real life personalities and preferences?

I know I do, I have created a character that wears lightweight gear, and leaves the inventory as free as possible. I like to ensure that I never carry more than
1/3 of my total allowable limit. Also, I never wear helmets. My character tends to be more of a magic user (though I do like my Daedric long blades and bow), and I don't attack unless I'm provoked.

In RL I am much the same, I hate carrying loads of stuff around, I dislike overly bulky clothing, I rarely wear hats, I tend to favour using brains over braun (: D) and while anybody who bothers me had better watch out, I don't go out of my way to provoke others (well not usually anyway :D )

In real life....

In real life I clear tall buildings with a single bound. I crush my enemies, and sometimes trap their screaming souls to enhance my abilities. I jump from huge buildings just for the fun of it, and keep bouncing as I rush everywhere. I swim underwater as long as I want. Undead hordes fall to my fiery demon-forged blade and are crushed beneath my magic heels. I have singlehandedly ended the age of dinosaurs (or at least the flying variety). Yep, life is just like in the game for me. Can I take my tongue out of my cheek now, it's beginning to ache.

Seriously though, this does give me an idea. Maybe next time I play the game I will vow to kill no-one who can be dealt with in any other fashion. I'll have to investigate chameleon and invisibility and sneak much more, but that's ok, it'll be a different challenge in a different noble house (Hlaalu maybe).

Or perhaps I'll go the other way, crank up my character first, then begin the extermination of law enforcement, starting with Ordinators. ANYONE who says "Keep moving" to me then is a corpse who just hasn't had time to fall over yet. And before you ask, I'm NOT power mad, ruling one world is plenty enough for me.......

Has anyone managed to compete the game just with fists and no armour? Now there is a challenge for the jaded
The head of the guild asked a new prospect to descibe himself in as few words as possible. The prospect made it in one, "Concise".

well, im nowhere near as cool as my character, so i guess it would be n extension of my imagenery me, who i should be, because i enjoy waiting in the shadows waiting patiently for a guard to go past then silently stalking him, before remoing his head with single slash of my katana...etc

well my first character was, he was a wood elf, and if i were a Tolkien creature i would be a woodelf. I started looking at all my friends in terms of morrowind races now. As in: he would be an Imperial he would be an orc and he would be a high elf... I think ive played morrowind too much.... uh well back to my game

I'm playing with a woodelf whose major skills are sneak and security and speechcraft and the like. That doesn't mean I'm a thief or con-artist in RL (although I have this bridge in Brooklyn that I'd like to sell you) but I am the cautious sort. I don't leap before I l look and I like to have a plan ready just in case I'm faced with agression (which is not unusual in my line of work). It's also funny that my woodelf favors a bow... do it to them before they can do it to him.
Then again, my first character in BG was a half-orc barbarian

Well I don't think it is a direct reflection of myself (as my character is amazingly strong and I, well let's just say I really like my PC) but I did make a character in which I can feel at home.
I am a Breton, human but Elfborn I really like that, more to magic than fighting but still human in form.

my character's a powerful, righteous, sword-wielding female Redguard, very strong, incredible stamina, a beacon of hope for all the peoples of Vvardenfell.

it's spooky how well that describes me...

well, okay, I like hats, and my character collects helmets.

lol! Okay maybe I should clarify. :D
I did not necessarily mean a literal reflection, more of a metaphoric mirroring or an amplification of certain qualities. For example, you might be the sort of person that is likely to begin an argument, the MW equivalent of this would be something like beating the pulp out of an NPC in order to obtain something you need rather than trying to reason with them.
Similarly, you might personally be highly athletic and excel at sports... ;)

oh, I see. well, my character dislikes fighting people for the sake of it, and has a duplicitous, mercenary and frankly kleptomaniacal side to her.

I think you may have a point...

Never to lazy to help, however not to be f*cked. I am thinking about that guy who asks 50 gold (which I gave) and then wanted another 100, it reminds me of every time I meet a bum in the street. You give him half a euro (quite a valuable currency nowadays) and they always want more.

They oughta go to hell,
(and die)

well, a 'metaphorical mirroring' i think i am the type of person to "inhume" someone if they p*ss me off, though i think they would probably have to annoy me more than simply blocking my path, or calling me "scum"... that persons remainder of his short existence was not pleasant.

other than that , im cool

Choice of weapons and/or clothes can be important too. The fact that I use a bow most of the time probably means I don't like direct confrontations. And my PC runs around in robes. What do you figure is up with that??

@Hoebie, remind me not to ask you for money next time I run into you at Central Station in Rotterdam. :D ;)

It's not about asking for money, which I am happy to give even if I know you're gonna spend it on drugs. (whatever makes you happy) What triggers me is when I have given I get asked for more, always. That's when I become somewhat unstable.

But I think that as soon as you are strong enough in this game to allow yourself to wear what you like instead of what is strongest most people will do so. That is why I am now seeking out all these cool kind of knight armor plug-ins.

My character is a female, which I definetly am not. for some reason, I always end up playing female characters when rpg'ing. Don't start!!!! :p She tries to be a jack og all trades, much like me, but she's way too amoral for me.

I've never been able to play an RPG character very differently from my own personality. I couldn't side with Bohdi in BGII, I almost never accept evil characters into my party for long, and he always takes the sensitive, helpful conversation options instead of the irritable, angry ones. My current Argonian is no exception. He checked out the Morag Tong, and just couldn't bring himself to join. If someone asks for help, he'll generally accept the mission. I'm trying hard to play him in a different way than I usually do, but I keep hacking and slashing despite his mage/thief profession as a Nightblade. So I have to remind myself to go ahead and open that locked door or sneak up and take something that I could easily buy. I'm still having trouble remembering to blast away with spells rather than hack with my short sword...
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

Hell no!
I'm a violent chimp by nature, so i deliberately pick all the speech options etc that are likely to start a fight. Also the morag tong rules! Sitting on a rock about 100ft away from your target, lining the arrow up with the back of his/her neck. Damn man even in a computer game that feeling of anticipation is like enlightenement...

Fear me, for I shall bring silent death to you...

I'm Going hand2hand with no armor... so far yea its kinda tough but ill become a beast soon enough, I am basically playing it as tho it was RL, trying to be a good citizen and helping other people when they deserve it etc.

Hell, yea, I've never seen that, but there is similarity between my game characters and me. I always end up playing a sneaking character. I simple feel best. The same with good alignment. I'm playing now an evil party in BG2 and joined Bhodi and I'm feeling sick and all I want to do is starting a new game with a ranger or a thief. But I'll bring it on...even if it's hard to choose the evil talking options.

I tried out some more fighting oriented characters in Morrowind but I always try to have at least my sneaking and security skill. And at the end I'm stalking my opponents rather than chopping their heads in an open fight.

It's much more...but this would reveal too much of my RL characteristics. In Morrowind I always try to stay in the shadows, if you know what I mean...
