People are allowed to express their opinion as long as they do it civilly. If you post a topic that people have differing opinions on, expect to have some opposing opinions.

You are right, but this wasnt a gun poll. this thread was for gun owners and their questions about their weapons

If you were to look to look through some of SYM history you would find that threads here have a tendency to run off in any number of directions. This is particularly true in the case of potentially controversial subjects.
Bear in mind that a diverse group of people from a variety of continents post here. At SYM, discussions and debates of this nature are the norm rather than the exception.

Im not the biggest fan of guns but not in the I hate them way, more of like Im not the biggest fan of gospel music way. I know nothing about it.

Marksmanship is an art....that's what I enjoy the most about firearms. I've also dabbled a bit with archery, though not half as much as I would like to.

The right to bear arms has been an integral part of American culture since the beginning. Now, it can be said that Europeans have not always enjoyed that right, so my enjoyment/ownership of firearms is as incomprehensible to some of you as the concept of being forbidden by law to own them is to me. Of course, if one bases their concept of reality on Hollywood movies (as some obviously have

), then they are missing the mark by several feet.

For example, Scayde owns some very nice rifles...do you read about her in the news using her rifles on other people? She'll go to the firing range to zero them in, and she uses them to hunt with, and naturally she would use them to defend herself if she was forced to. Scayde is the average American gun owner...responsible is the word that comes to mind.

My own thoughts concerning the right to bear arms in my own country...one must understand the driving forces behind the American Revolution which shaped the US Constitution, and the empowerment of American citizens by that document. The "Founding Fathers", as they are called, looked to the lessons of history when they thought about how the people of the nation should be governed. The centuries of excess exibited by the European monarchies, and the Feudal system in particular, were first and foremost on their minds. It was common practice to prevent the citizenry from gaining access to arms, as this discouraged the commoners and peasants from revolting against a government or nobility that they were not pleased with. It was quite effective, too.

That's where American thinking departs from Europe. A government only governs by the consent of the governed...at least that is the spirit of America I believe in, and is captured in the writings of one of my idols, Thomas Jefferson. By giving the American people the power to change their government by peaceful process, the possibility of an armed revolution and the resulting chaos is reduced to virtually nil.

Bear in mind, too, that America was (and still is in some areas) Frontier land...wild, untamed, and sparsely populated. Settlers were encouraged to pursue their dreams in the most remote regions of this country with land deed in hand, a wagon, a team of horses and mules, and the family firearms. They needed those firearms to protect themselves against wild animals, natives who sought to drive them out of their ancestral lands (another matter altogether

), hunt, and be the Law where the law could not reach at the time.

It is very difficult for anyone who has not lived in America to make accurate judgements concerning our culture, since it is not monolithic. People who live in the Southwest, South, and parts of the Mid-West still own firearms like their ancestors did. In the more settled and metropolitan Northeast, firearm ownership is not as common, unless it is for self-defense purposes.

I find it quite interesting, though not surprising given the differing histories of the US and Canada, that our gun laws are somewhere in between those of the U.S and the various European countries.

As far as the frontier and the need to defend one's self goes, Canada's past is not really all that different from the gradual exploration and settlement that occurred in the US. As you mention, though, the real difference is likely that we remained a British colony

Yes...Canada seems to me to be a blend of the North American lifestyle with a European twist, after a manner of speaking.

LOL...well, considering that large stretches of Canada remain frontierland, I would say Canada has the edge there. If I remember correctly, it is legal to own what is classified as hunting firearms in Canada, correct? Hmmm....of course, one can outfit a long-barreled (8 inches long if memory serves me) .44 magnum revolver with a scope, and presto!...legal hunting firearm (in the US anyway).

When I think of the Canadian frontier, I think of the Long Hunters, with their awesome flintlock rifles. There's more common ground between the US and Canada, as the Long Hunters were both American and Canadian. Of course, now we are getting to the issue of my honorary Canuck status, since my mother's paternal side of her family, Peltier, were from Quebec, with a great deal of Indian in the mix. Not sure what tribe to be honest, but her father's grandfather was pure-blooded Indian.

Whoa im back! from a fishing trip. looks like ive missed some things. Ive found that the new M-249 LMG only jams every 26,000 rounds, pretty reliable. thats petty much all ive learned this week. by the way, does anyone here have or has heard of the L1A1 FAL or the C7? pretty good guns i might add.
