Minsc at 19 STR

Post by UncleScratchy »

Minsc starts the game at an 18/96 strength. I noticed somewhere along the way he progressed to 19 strength. Does anyone know what event triggers his increase in strength? I've got the UB mod and Baldurdash fixpak installed. Its been a really long time since I've played with Minsc in my party but this perk makes him a more desireable party member.

His increased strength is the reward for getting Boo back ;)

Thanks, I suspected it was one of the mods. I know UB restores a lot of the broken scripts and plots but I have to wonder about a few that still linger on - like the King of the Mushrooms in the Copper Coronet sewers, The Hidden/Uncle Gerhardt/Lady Jysstev connection, those smugglers behind the secret door in the docks inn, why Tazok has the key to the secret mind flayer nest in the Temple sewers and what are they up to, etc.

What is UB? I usually dont install the mods, (dont cheat that much, Ill use CLUA sometimes) but one that restores broken scripts sounds interesting. Disappointing to hear that the mushroom guys arent fixed (just what the heck WAS that all about anyway?) but there are so many not quite finished parts that Id love to hear about a fix for that.

What do mods have to do with cheating ? Ok, some are not very well balanced as far as items are concerned (that's why I don't install item upgrade mod, the game is easy enough without that overpowered stuff), but most are quite good.
For a list of mods see the sticky thread, on page 3 is a very good (and long) list of mods.

UB=Unfinished Business Mod

Its the Unfinished Business mod from Icelus and his pals. Its up to version 6 now so most of the minor bugs have been worked out. Do a search on "Unfinished Business" and you should find Icelus' post with a link to his download site. Its very nice and unlike a lot of mods stays within the spirit of the game. It restores Misnc's quest (the kidnapping of Boo), fixes the Sir Sarles quest for illithium, restores the Kalah/Circus/Crooked Crane link, restores the Pai'Na (spider queen) quest, fixes Xzar's necromancer creations so you get something other than dippy goblins, etc. It was supposed to restore hell hound encounters in the Unseeing Eye and Planar Sphere quests but I didn't encounter any in the Unseeing Eye quest. Haven't done the Planar Sphere yet though.

Hmm, I had some hellhounds while doing the Unseeing Eye quest in my last game. Perhaps it has something to do with the level-based spawning that they didn't show up for you.

Hopefully its something like that. Where did you encounter the hell hounds? What are they like? I ran into the usuall shadow beasts, a few bands of lizard people, the mini-beholders and big beholders, the usual band of mummies and skellies. Party was not high enough to trigger any liches though. Did you get the lich as well as the hell hounds?

They were in the room where you are ambushed by four *don't know the english name* :D when you approach the exit. Instead of those, the hellhounds appeared.

Do you mean in the center of the beholder lair where the four cult worshippers are after you kill the Unseeing Eye with the rift device? In my game I got the four guys - at least I'm pretty sure I did as I recall looting their bodies.

No, it's not in the actual beholder area, it's in the area where Gaal, the Elemental Lich etc. are.
It's the room in the top right corner of this map (right next to the entrance):

Yes, that is the first encounter. The .are file referenced a trap script that was to spawn in the hounds, but the script was never included with the game. The other location is in the planar sphere.

Oh well, I don't recall seeing them. But I did just finish the Planar Sphere and encountered them there (in the fire room). I looked them up in SK and there are two types of hell hounds. Both have 18 STR but one set only has high (>100 pts) immunities to elemental and magical fire the other set has high immunities to everything possible. I didn't have any trouble with them so I'm assuming they were the lesser ones. I think I was expecting something a bit more impressive than creatures that look like dire wolves. Still, I'm glad they made it back into the game.
