Question about the strongholds.

I'm currently in the stronghold of Marandus, and I went inside and ran up to the lady and talked to her before she attacked me, and she said she was something something something of the Redoran House, so I exited the conversation and she attacked me. (Does that ever happen to anyone else? If you know a person is going to attack you, but you run up and talk to them before they do you can talk to them about anything as long as you don't exit the convo, because once you go back out, they attack you?) Anyways, I killed the lady (because she attacked me), and I went through and killed everyone who attacked me. I was wondering two things:
1. Why do people in strongholds attack you?
2. Since I killed the lady that was a member of the Redoran House, will I still be able to join?
I haven't joined a House yet and I wanted to join Redoran, but will they let me in?
Oh, another question. Which house is best to join? I don't want to join Hlaalo, because I already have with previous characters. I hear that Redoran specializes in combat, while Telvanni specializes in magic. I'm a Dark Elf who "specializes" in magic, but it doesn't really matter because I'm currently working on getting all my skills up to 100. So I don't care about which House specializes in what, I'm just wondering which might be better/more fun to join. Thanks.

Since the lady attacked you, you should be allowed to join Redorian.

So I don't care about which House specializes in what, I'm just wondering which might be better/more fun to join

I like Telvanni, because of the base and if you are a member they treat you with respect. Hlallu didn't. Once I asked for advancement from the Hlallu person in Balmora and she said like, "What have you done for us, you don't deserve it"

strongholds are, apart frm the occasional quest, fairly generic dungeons, just like the smuggler caves. the random dudes attack you because, well, that's their job.

if you're a mage, I'd say go telvanni. I'm a redoran man myself, but their quests can be very combat-centric. telvanni is a magic-centric house, so it'd suit your character more, but it's all down to personal preference.

I was going to join House Telvanni, but then I read somewhere that there's a bug with that House, and somewhere along the way they won't let you advance. I just don't want to run into that bug...

Ima telvanni type myself, just cause theyre wierd.hehehe, theyl even talk to you if your a vampire.

I have been in the Telvanni and rised to Arch-Magister countlless times and I have NEVER encountered that bug, or any bug.
