I just stepped off the ship to enter Brynnlaw when i noticed that after the cutscene, i could no longer see my icons, like my item inventory, or my main menu, so there was no strip displaying party members, the entire side frames were no longer there, the only was i could acces these icons was to pause (space) and the frames would reappear. This has never happend before.

(This is definitely in the manual)

BG2 allows you to hide the panels on each side. There is a toggle/un-toggle key ("H" is one, IIRC) or you can click on the round buttons on each side of the horizontal bar to restore the respective panels. When you pause, all panels are displayed.
