Assasinating

Post by Barrin »

i want to use my Assasin to hide in the shadows then backstab a person. i have never really understood backstabbing from what little i heard. What i got was you hide in shadows then stab from behind for x7 damage. But whenever i hide in the shadows, if my Assasin sees an enemy, she attacks it. do i need to change her scripts?

First of all, change your character script to "none". Especially when playing a thief, you want full control and the custom script can be quite a pain.

To backstab, you need 1) to be invisible; 2) to be standing behind the person/creature you want to backstab and 3) to have a weapon equipped that allows backstabbing (swords, katanas, scimitars, daggers, quarterstaves(?)). Then you just attack and provided you can hit, your damage will be multiplied by your backstab multiplier.

In BG2, hiding in shadows is not always 100% reliable, so it is safer to use invisibility potions, items or spells. One particular nastiness you can do is cast Mislead (6th level mage spell, so you need a mage-thief) which will allow you to remain hidden until your clone is killed/dispelled and backstab with every hit!

Backstabbing is easy and fun, especially with an assassin, it's a pleasure :)

You can backstab with any thief usable melee weapon. So you can even backstab with clubs (!)

NB - The UAI ability does NOT give you backstab if you would otherwise not have it, so no backstabbing with Carsomyr or the Staff of the Magi.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

can mage/thieves backstab with Staff of the Magi then? Would seem to be a rather cheap way of getting backstabs, especially if the mage casts some thac0 improving spell like tenser's.

As Nephtu just said, you can't backstab with non-thief weapons, even if you can use them with UAI: so staff of the Magi is a non-thief weapon (restricted use only to mages) and so you can't backstab with it.

when u backstab use Celestial Fury its our only weapon of choise allong with the daystar.
and for real backstab potions and rings are better then hide in shadows or just turn of your AI so your thief wont attack until u say so

i'd rather have a high HIS score with the cloak of non-detection to backstab.

bear in mind, the cloak does not protect you when you're invisible, so mages can be casting the true sight and you'll be screwed
