aligned swords
aligned swords
I don't know if I am reading too much into this but the following swords in my opinion have alignments just like the characters.
Good aligned: Carsemour ( I don't think I spelt that right)
Neutral aligned: Equilizer (O duh)
Evil aligned: The black razor (It says its evil in the description)
Are there any other aligned weapon or armour?

All swords (or any other edged melee weapon for that matter) are meant to chop heads off; that's why you carry them.
Yes, Vorpal Silver Swords are made by Githyanki. So what? Does that make them any more or less evil than say the Axe of the Unyielding +5, which has a 10% chance of dealing a vorpal decaptitation on any given strike?
The fact that a weapon was made by a particular race does not mean that the weapon itself is a tool of either good or evil, although some weapons are only useful to those of a particular alignment (ie-the Crystal Shard, Excalibur, etc.).
For instance, dwarves are generally a force for good, but a dwarven axe or hammer (Aegis-fang!) in the hands of a malevolent nogoodnik is something to be feared. Similarly, if a paladin were to get his hands on a drow sword, woe be to those who fall in his path.

Hmn, agreed, but most good weapons resist, in one way or another, being wielded by evil creatures. And what's so special about Drow weapons? Sure, they are finely made and heavily enchanted, but a dwarven-forged, elven enchanted blade could be just as good/better...

It's those special "Underdark radiations" that make drow weapons and armour so formidable. Did you notice how the enchanted Drow Chain and Drow Plate in the game is either +3 or +5, and that there is no piddling +1 or +2 stuff, and very little by way of non-magical drow weapons?
I think one thing we (as the heroes of the game) take for granted is the bountiful supply of magical stuff. By the time you finish Bodhi off in Chapter 6, if your character has anything less than a +3 weapon and an armour class higher than -2, you must have done something horribly wrong.
It's not that drow craftsmanship or magical prowess is any better than their surface-dwelling cousins, it that every drow elf has magical armour and weapons. Even going back to the first edition of Fiend Folio, the drow were heavily laden with magical gear, more so than any other race.

Mhm. "Faerzress". IIRC, the armor and weapons itself is made by Duergar smiths, the enchanting is done by the Drow...Originally posted by HighLordDave:

Do the swords themselves really have an alignment? I thought only "intelligent" weapons (such as Lilarcor) could have an alignment, and that the rest was simply warded against other alignments by the person that enchanted them.Originally posted by trunks:

Didn't this have to do with some Dark Adamant or similar Underdark specific metal? Some stuff that is very powerful but turns to dust in the daylight (which kinda counterbalances it).Originally posted by HighLordDave:

Here's another good-aligned weapon - Azuredge axe +3
and one evil too - Spear +3 backbiter
And yes the Drow weaponry is good because it's made of adamantine, an alloy of adamantite (at least that's what it says in the game).
Oh, and personally, I think that Lilarcor is the coolest thing/character in the game and he probably is evil.

As our friend Xyx says, drow weapons and metal armour are indeed made of adamandite (or some other fictional metal that sounds like you could bond it to someone's skeleton to make them indestructible). However, depending on who you read, the effects of sunlight vary.
In the game, the minute you step out of the Underdark, any drow weapons and armour you have immediately turn to dust. I think this is just an excuse to get you out of your Full Plate +5. After all, if it is indeed the sun that affects your stuff, you should be able to stick all of your drow equipment in a Bag of Holding, it should survive idefinitely. What about other drow items made of similar metals? You get a bunch of stuff from the Underdark which work fine on the surface: potions, scrolls, etc.
Also, if adamandite is as strong as the game claims, it would stand to reason that other good deep-dwelling races would use it (ie-svirfneblin, mountain dwarves, etc.) and that their equipment too would disintegrate in the sun, which it does not.
As I have stated before, Salvatore made several references to the drow using special magicks combined with the "Underdark radiations" to enchant their weapons. When exposed to sunlight, the enchantments broke down and caused the equipment to fail and eventually break/disintegrate. It is also these radiations that power some of the innate drow abilities (ie-levitation, etc.) because Drizzt slowly began to lose some powers once leaving the Underdark (why he retained the ability to cast Faerie Fire and Globe of Darkenss is never explained).
It is my opinion that in the interest of game balance the BG2 design team decided that drow equipment would disintegrate the minute you left the Underdark. After all, it would be rather involved to set timers to all of the equipment so that they would lose one point of enchantment per day until it was zero and then turn to dust.

Levitation and other magical abilities are "higher" abilites. Only noble drows can use them. The sun light affects to their power because they get'em from earth of underdark. Globe of darkness & faerie fire are elf special abilities and they haved them before other elves kicked them to underdark.

To Xyx certain weapons and armour can be said to have an alignment because they prefer one alignment over the other. Either in dealing damage, the type of damage or by its choice of weilder alignment. At least that's how I see it.
Black Razor: Level drain (definetly evil)
Equilizer: Does more damage to none neutral aligned creatures.
Carsemour: Can only be weilded by Paladins and does more damage to Chaotic evil characters.

Daystar - normally a +2 sword, +4 against evil creatures
Flame of the North - +4 extra damage to chaotic evil opponents
Rod of Terror - 'nuff said
Skull of Death - very evil helmet
Another evil object in the game should be the Ring of Gaxx, because it sez in the item description that

That's it for now, when I find some more, I'll try to post it here. This ring is relatively unadorned, but the vile magic within radiates intense evil.

This Halberd +2, Duskblade---his weapon spent many hundreds of years in a tomb next to the soul phylactery of a powerful lich. such close proximity to that concentrated evil has imbued this blade with the very essence of night and the chill of darkness, It is a foul weapon.

I'd love to see some weapons that will attack a player if they're the opposite alignment, or sulk and only occasionally work if they're slightly off. And I'd like to see weapons that corrupt or purify the user, slowly bending their alignment.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
