Finished NWN, should I play SOU or skip?

Post by jcook119 »

Just finished up the NWN single-player campaign, and I am rather disappointed in the ending. Nothing on what happens to Aribeth or anyone else for that matter.

To add insult to injury, I see that SOU expects you to start with a new character, but HOTU starts at 15th. I do not want to start a new character for SOTU, but I figure that if I go ahead and use my existing one that he will just blow through most of the game. Is there any good reason that I should play SOU, or should I just skip it and go on to HOTU?

Thanks,
James

SoU is made for a new character and a new storyline that doesn't follow from NwN. It plays out either during or after the original NwN, because there are references to both NwN and SoU in HotU The henchmen from NwN that appear in HotU doesn't recognise you as the person that saved Neverwinter, but the one henchmen that appears in HotU from SoU does recognise you.

If you import your character from the original NwN into to SoU you will find it waaaay easy, because the game is made for a new character, level 1 and upwards, and you likely ended the original with level 15-18 character.

If you should play SoU or not, well - that is hard to answer for anybody but yourself. If you already have bought it - I think you should play it, and then I do think you should start with a new character first because that is what the gamemodules were build up towards. Then afterwards - you could always import you other character and run through it collecting items and money,
preparing for HotU.

HotU follows after the storyline from SoU, the people there will think you are the one that did all the stuff in SoU.

Hope this helps with your considerations.

If I'm not mistaken, all your gear will be stolen from any character you import into HotU. I believe you will still have your gold, but that's it. You may want to sell as much gear as possible before you finish SoU. That way when you get to HotU naked, you can afford to buy some decent stuff to get you through til you find better, which doesn't take too long.

BTW, I just finished the NWN OC last weekend, and I have to agree, the ending was somewhat of a let down. I started on SoU last night again (played briefly when it first came out, then quit). I did import my NWN character, only because I want to try a high level character in HotU. I will probably go back at some point and experiment with new/different class/race combos, but for now, I would just like to get through to the end. :)

SoU isn't bad, but I've only reached the desert so I can't give a full pull picture.

In Sou your actions have consequences, all be it a bit minimal.

They made it a quest for good and evil characters, which is a plus IMO.

It does have A LOT in commen with NwN, you start of being an paprentice but then your school is attacked (sound familiar?) and then you have too find 4 items to make it all better (familiar again?).

Nice is the part where you have to choose between two sides.

Stange is it that your first chapter is in the freezing cold and then when you go to the next chapter you suddenly find yourself in the hot desert. Very odd...

So far I enjoyed it more the NwN though.

Withouth spoiling to much - you will get back what is stolen, after a while.

I also enjoyed SoU more then the original NwN, but HotU is still the favorite part of NwN for me - although I don't like that they went so "Throne of Bhaal" on us. :D
But I still think SoU is worth to play, if one likes NwN somewhat :)

I enjoyed playing NwN. Can you say what you enjoy more about SoU and HotU than NwN?

I never played HotU but I mentioned what I liked better about SoU compared with NwN above.

I simply enjoyed the story and the implemantion more, there were more areas, where you had a choices on how to complete the area/quest, and I felt your actions carried greater consequences then in NwN.
I acidently got evil alignment in SoU doing something I'd done for "years" in the original NwN (although, logically it should be so) - so I reloaded and stopped (I was playing a pally :D )

The official modules aren't really a good indicator of what one can press out of NwN, but I felt SoU and HotU came closer to that, then the original NwN campaign.

My main beef with SoU is that it is to much hack 'n slash and to short. But that goes with all the official NwN campaigns, so isn't really descriptive of SoU :)
