Defining noobs

Post by HiRo11er »

It seems like most forums breed something of a hatred for 'noobs', and pretty much anyone that isn't a seasoned veteran (GB not included)... Now, I don't categorize myself as a 'noob' by any standards (not that it's a bad thing... ;) ), but there are still many aspects of the game that I am totally unfamiliar with.

Why is being a noob so bad? And where is the line drawn between noob and veteran? I still haven't finished the game, or ever made a single potion; does that make me a 'noob'? Am I still a 'noob' if I can offer advice to other gamers that are stuck, or does one good advice remove me from 'noob' status??

Maybe 'noob' is just an expression for someone that does dumb things like enchanting an item with swift swim and waterwalk, or does it have to do with the amount of time spent on the game?

Also, I think it's pretty lame to categorize someone as a noob just because they're new to the forums and post a question that has been asked before. There are so many people in these forums, and such a flow of new people showing up and old people leaving that you have to expect some repetition with this many players...

Besides, it should be up to the moderators to cancel unnecessary threads and guide whoever started it to the appropriate thread anyway, right..? :p

If you're a noob-basher, please tell me why they suck so bad, so I can better understand you!

Well personally I'm no 'noob basher' ;) Everyone is new to a game at some point and 'veterans' should recognise this.

I do, however, sometimes get mildy irritated when players, even after having been directed to it, seem utterly incapable of using the search function, or simply don't bother looking for things themselves. I know the search function occasionally does not work (I have had this happen to me).. but even so....

One of the reasons I keep coming back to GB is that there's no bashing of any kind around here.
As to the why: I guess it's tempting for some to insult other people when there are no consequences. If you go to a bar and insult the local bikers they'll hand you your teeth. That doesn't happen on the internet, because you're anonymous.

You just might be a noob if ...

I don't think GB has much in the way of noob bashing. In fact most people here are so nice they don't even bash the noobs and non-noobs that beg for it.

This thread got me to thinking about the Jeff Foxworthy bit regarding Rednecks. You know, the "You just might be a redneck if ..." never ending series of one-liner jokes.

So here goes:

You just might be a noob if you inadvertently start a new thread every time you try to reply to to an existing thread.

You just might be a noob if invisible writing baffles you.

You just might be a noob if you title every new thread with some variation of "Please help me", "I need help", or "Help please".

You just might be a noob if you insist on posting your characters stats as if anyone could possibly care.

You just might be a noob if you responded to 50 old threads in one day to become an exalted member.

You just might be a noob if you think you are the only one ever to discover the guy that falls out of the sky in Seyda Neen.

You just might be a noob if you insist on giving bad directions to some place you've never been to before.

You just might be a noob if you think your level 12 character is the baddest thing ever to appear on the monitor.

You just might be a noob if you can't figure out how to use armorer's hammers.

You just might be a noob if you post a new poll every day that starts out with "What's your favorite ..."

You just might be a noob if you can't walk and sneak at the same time.

Sorry if I offended anyone. As Triump would say: I joke, I joke!

There is nothing wrong with noobs, I think. We were all noobs at one point or another. Noobs can get better and I wouldn’t underestimate one either. A noob is basically just someone who doesn’t know something about a game that you do. Veterans will often call each other noobs for making the littlest mistakes, you can feel the ego in the air during their arguments. They created the word to define people who aren’t as good as them yet. Some people get over emotional while playing games and act like they will kill a noob if they join his/her team and will only play against noobs sometimes. However I just ignore these people and try to help my allies the best I can and often I don’t mind playing with noobs on my side if it’s too easy playing with experts, so I’ll switch teams before the match. Anyone who uses the term noob as anything other then a reference isn’t my ideal partner to play with, they get over excited when they win and scream when they lose. Maybe I just define the word apathy, but I still think it’s just plain annoying the way these people are.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

You just might be a noob if you let out a big "Woohoo!" when you've killed a cliff racer.

You just might be a noob if you actually have to search for that ring of wizardry near the Friendly Arms Inn.

You just might be a noob if you get frustrated trying to Call Lightning in some dungeon, house or cave.

You just might be a noob if you buy a crate of potions of infravision because you figure they might come in handy.

You just might be a noob if you proudly posted how you beat that darn Kangaxx.

I've done that.

Oh, how silly we can be when we are new. :D Personally, I have nothing against "noobs". I just have problems with ignorant "noobs" who think they're the baddest thing on our
refined and established forums. :D

I don't see all that much bashing around here. Sometimes I get a little irritated when people ask a question that they could answer themselves if they played the game for five more minutes, but that's just me. :D

Newbie
A term that sometimes means new player but also is used to mean a player is not very good.

Newb
Short for Newbie. See above.

N00b
An incredibly uncool way to say newb. Don't use it.
Or so says Blizzard. ;) http://www.battle.net/war3/basics/glossary.shtml

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

This thread should definitely have been named 'you know you might be a noob if...", but that's all just semantics. :) I figured i have to throw in a few more of those one-liners...

- You might just be a noob if you eagerly await replies to your "PLEASE HELP!" post, when a two minute search on google will get you all the info you need...

- You might just be a noob if you think your silver shortsword is as sweet as it gets.

- You might just be a noob if you get super-annoyed and reload the game every time you get corprus...

-You just might be a noob if you freak out & heal yourself of corprus right away before gaining any positive effects...

-You might just be a noob if your inventory is full of average potions of light/shadow/frost shield/night eye "just in case".

-You might just be a noob if you panic & reload if you mess up the pelagiad quest involving the love affair between robber & and robbee.

This was fun. Keep em coming, guys! (& gals)
