Universal Morality, or Universal Ethics...does such a thing exist?

I believe that there are universal truths or ethics... and many seem to connect directly with human surivival and/or maintaining social harmony.

However, I think that while such universals exist, different cultures interpret and define them within their own particular experience, framework and values.

LOL...Ya gotta love it !

I don't think ethics exists on a universal level. If it does, then what defines it?

Hmm.. as I am a Christian, I'd say yes. Because God is Lord of.. well.. everything, and He made the rules. There is a truth and it's God. :)

Otherwise you could just see morals and ethics as developed by man.. it is possible that a different species somewhere in the galaxy would develop the same system, but not necessary I think. Morals and ethics (or the interpretation and value of them)do change between different individuals, but as I believe in God, I believe in an extreme good, and an extreme evil, acts being good and evil, whether people see them as such or not.

On truth: I believe there is one truth, one reality which encapsulates everything, we just don't know what it is. I may believe in God and that my way of worship/belief is the (or close to the) way God wants it, doesn't mean it's true and that I am right. It's true that I believe that, though.

I do not believe that there is a true good or evil, nor is there real 'truth' so to speak. These concepts are created by man, and thus cannot be taken as universal or infalliable. Proof of this is in the changes we see, in both moraity and good and evil, from culture to culture, and society to society.

Even if we were to unite as a single nation or group, these concepts wouldn't become anymore true, as they would still be concepts created by man.

I would say it depends 100% on the situation and what is being observed.

I think that there is such a thing as universial ethics in some/many areas of human life. But I do however also recognize that all people and cultures (currently :) ) are different and in different situations, which could make actions, that to some could seem un-ethical, somewhat more understandeble. (I'm not saying more ethical ;) )

Ah so there are situations when even the worst of crimes would be right then?
"In Germany, they first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the homosexuals and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a homosexual. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a protestant. Then they came for me--but by that time there was no one left to speak up."
