Spells I’ve never tried and wonder if they are useful:

Blind (most Blind spells seem to have relatively low percentages – what’s the use of blinding an enemy only 10%?)

Turn Undead (why would I turn an enemy that I want to kill? I suppose if you are overwhelmed…)

Demoralize Beast/Creature (same as Turn Undead)

Sound (it seems the standard sound spells only last a few seconds, and one would have to be pretty quick to get the spell off before the other caster can get his spell fired off. I’ve also never tried it as a non-combat distracting tool – does this work well?)

Armor Eater and Weapon Eater (maybe these could be used on low-level characters with cheap equipment, but otherwise it just seems to be a nuisance. Why damage a piece of equipment that you’re going to loot anyway?)

Burden (I’ve never worked with this, but only because I’ve forgotten about it. It could be very useful.)

Weakness to Common Disease (really, how can this be helpful, especially without a spell that causes disease?)

Rally Beast/Creature (there are so few opportunities for companions, and I find they usually just get in the way…

Damage Attribute (I can see that damaging the enemy’s Strength and Health could help, but why bother damaging Luck, Endurance, Speed, Willpower, Personality, Agility, or Intelligence? Damaging Endurance would only be useful on those you want to pummel, and damaging Magica would only work on spell casters that you can’t deal with otherwise.)

“Scourge Blade” (I have to laugh at the idea of draining someone’s Longblade skill…. ;) But I hope to try it someday!)

Spells I do find useful that others think are useless:

I have found the Detect spells to be useful in some cases. Detect Key is good when you’re looking for a way into a specific cabinet – there’s one on Solstheim that comes to mind. I once set a ring that I needed on the ground in a large room, then couldn’t find the darn thing again until I used a potion of Detect Enchantment. There is also a Imperial Cult quest where Detect Enchantment is useful. There is a helm on Solstheim that give CE Detect Creature for 100’ that is great! I could wear that and avoid all the Spriggans and other nasty critters when I was running back and forth on all those quests. Also, you can enter a cave and use Detect Creature to get a preview of how many monsters you are likely to face around the next bend.

Light can be useful at early levels, but I agree with others that Night Eye is much better. Especially as a long-lasting potion or CE effect.

Cure Paralysis is very helpful in potion form! I hate having to stand there and let the bad guy just whack at me! Best way to die. I suppose the spell form of Resist Paralysis can also be useful if you cast it before going up against a bad guy who will paralyze your, and Free Action can also be useful if made into a CE enchantment.

Fortify Speed is good for those long walks - either as a potion or as the spell, especially if you don't have the Boots of Blinding Speed or can't wear them because you're one of the beast races. Also good if you use Short Blades.
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

Thanks, Gwalchmai - lists like that were exactly what I was hoping for. So now, for useless spells/potions, we're up to 11!
blind
turn undead
demoralize
sound
armor/weapon eater
burden
weakness to common disease
damage attribute
light
detect creature
cure paralysis
Write in with any disagreements, and especially with what you think should be at the top of the useless list. Should we take off cure paralysis, light, or burden?
you know what they say about all work and no play...

I disagree with Fortify Attribute being a useless spell. True for 10 seconds it isnt very helpful, but more experianced Mages can cast like 20 points for a full minute, which can be really helpful during fights or when you need to carry an extra load of stuff from point A to point B.. but thats just my thoughts..
What a wonderous love it is
To bind two souls in faith,
Chained completely together
With never a false word,
Weal and woe, wish and real,
Woven each together
From first kiss to last breath
First and last whispered in love

if you want a full suit of daedric, cast many many armor eaters at fyr, and if a piece of armor has no hit points, it becomes unequipped...and now you can steal it off him... :p :p :p

yes, its frightning how many cheeses i know...

damage attribute is the most powerful attack spells known...much better than drain or absorb...

cast damage strength at any enemy, they can't MOVE...alllowing you to practice marksmanship...damage int, or magicka, and they can't even cast spells at you...(one of the ascended sleeper's attack spells has a chance if you have spell absorbtion for you to aquire a dagoth curse...it can be one of the spells that damage magicka) :p :p :p
They call me Darth...

I agree. Admittedly (sp?), as Fable pointed out, fortify speed is pretty darn useless. But fortify strength & endurance are useful, especially when CE. I guess I forgot about those two earlier. :D Because they ARE pretty useful when you find a whole bunch of stuff to sell.
I wanted to change my sig, but I can't think of anything to change it to :(

You mean Boots of Blinding Speed? I never got those, f you do. I ditched the person who gives them to you. I didn't know how to get her over this one mountain, so I just left her.

IMO light and night eye are both useless. Why do you think the brightness-slider exists?
