I usually stick with Vic, Sullick and Cassidy when playing with a party.
Vic is a nice all-round character in my oppinion, that does quite well, when given a longer range weapon.
Sullick is just a mad man later in the game. Equip him with a Ripper or Powerfist (remember to reload for him ,the poor guy can't do it himself) and I've seen him slice n' dice Enclave people easy.
Cassidy I don't really know why I have along, I guess it is to use all the shot-gun ammo I find .
I would rarely change my "crew", possible picking up Myron instead of Cassidy just for the fun of it
I never go with Marcus - something about mutants and I don't like the fact he can't wear armour. Cannon Fodder in the later game imo.

I like Sulik a lot. Especially the invaluable advice Grampy Bones gives him. I like to equip him with a Super Sledge and a submachine gun (continue to upgrade throughout the game as you come upon better machine guns). Just don't give him any other weapons to carry so he can't revert back to something stupid and be sure to customize his combat controls.
Vic is the man when it comes to shotguns. Give him a Pancor Jackhammer and he does fine. Keep him away from pistols though - he seems to miss a lot with them. I usually take him along.
Cassidy is great with plasma guns. He seems to be able to sqeeze off two shots per round with the plasma pistol. Cassidy can also be equipped with just about any "small" gun and do well with it. I usually have him in my party.
Brain Bot is good with the EMP rifle. I sometimes will take him along.
Marcus is just plain dangerous unless you limit him to plasma rifles. With anything else he will probably kill most of your party with his bad aim. Of course you can take him along equipped with a Bozar or rocket launcher and watch him make hay out of the enemies - at least until he eats it himself. Good when indiscriminant killing is in order. Seldom take him into the party.
Myron is pretty much useless even with power armor. His med making skills are not worth the bother. Use him to get the cure for Jet addiction, maybe extract his brain for use in Brain Bot, etc. but otherwise he's a liability. Only have him in the party if I want to take him to Sierra and show him how the brain extractor works (maliciously chuckles to himself).
Then there are these obscure NPC's:
Goris leaves the party to soon and as a deathclaw just doesn't measure up very well. Take him along only to see how he does in combat until he eats it as well.
Ghoul from Gecko. As bad as Myron and really, really slow. His medical abilities aren't worth the bother. Not very good with any weapons either.
Daughter of Slaughter house owner. She's pretty worthless as well. Also hard to get unless your stats are just right. I can't even remember if she's good with any weapons.
Have I forgotten anyone? (Other than Dogmeat?)
So for me the standard party is Sulik/Vic/Cassidy.

Well - I would write that off as pure luck
I've had burst NPCs gutting team members on more then one occasion throughout the game, and often just plainly hitting teammembers for more damage then the enemy
"Oops! Cassidy critically hit Vic for 235 damage, gutting him alive." ..... ahh, the nostalgia.
Think I have to start a new FO2 game again after finishing FO1 recently (again)

Yup, you forgot the son of the slaughter house owner
Pretty much the same though.....
But I love the 'Gigolo'-Perk LOL

Oh yes, both the slaughterhouse "kids" are useless. At best, they can carry stuff, but nothing more, really
I usually pick up Sulik, Vic and Cassidy as early as possible. At lower levels, Sulik does much more damage than me with his sledge hammer. I usually play without any weapons until I can get a good gun. My first gun is usually the Desert Eagle
I also find Marcus to be a good member of my party. I always get him. He does give me heart attacks sometimes, tho...when he pulls out his minigun, or later, the plasma rifle LOL I never give him rocket launchers. Chances are he's going to do some good damage to the rest of the party too. I actually find him more careful when using burst mode, and rarely hits the rest of us. Now Vic, however... *shrugs*
If you want Sulik to do some serious damage, give him a Grease Gun

I found that Marcus takes down everything with a bozar or a gatling gun. (or maybe just anything big with a burst mode?)
Vic is the man once you get the gauss rifle
and Cassidy can take down anybody with a shotgun (I gave him a Pancor Jackhammer)
When it comes to the slaughterhouse kids, I only found the girl, and everytime i tried something on her, the father came in with an angry look and a shotgun, while I was naked.

I've found some kickin npc combos. Here are my favorites starting with who I've found to be most useful.
1. Marcus with a rocket launcher and a Bozar, he'll know which one to use. He often does more damage than I do. Sometimes he'll hit friendly units, but surprisingly rarely if you give him a choice of weapons to use.
2. Cassidy with a gauss rifle.
3. Vic with gauss rifle
(If you want more)
4. Sulik with a HKG11E or a Super Sledge, both good choices
5. lenny would have to be my last choice, he can wear power armor and he can use the gauss pistol and 223 pistol. Not bad.
Myron and the dogs are all useless, brainbot and Gorris just tend to die too fast.

- Coco, mighty pirate
Perfect party
Here is the endgame party I always use:
1. Cassidy with power armor and gauss rifle
2. marcus with avenger minigun or vindicator and rocket launcher
3. brainbot with gauss rifle and human brain of course
Plus my humble character with gauss rifle/bozar/sniper feat and 10 luck... let's just say - we kick ass...!

"Twice the pride - double the fall" - Count Dooku.
If you want a really good sniping/efficient party, Brainbot, Cassidy, and Vic all equipped with Gauss Rifles are pretty good at mowing things down. Add in heavy support from Marcus (Bozar, Pulse Rifle, or Turbo Plasma rifle) and You (if you use the Bozar) and it's a pretty good killing machine.
BTW - I think you would need the magnetic personality trait to use all four i mentioned; Vic and Brainbot are the toss-up then.

"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's if you get back up."
Yeah, four would be nice, but even with just three NPC's someone would always stand in the way for my burst modes, (and you don't want to be in the way of someone with a HK G11E, 221 small gun skill, sniper perk, and 9 luck)
That's one of the main reasons to why I dumped Sullik, I miss his bone though
