What are those things that look as though they are wearing gas masks

Post by dragon wench »

This feels like a somewhat stupid question... so my apologies ;)

I figured if I am going to be doing any dialogue writing for DM's project it would help if I did more of the main quest, in which I had not progressed much at all. Consequently, I spent quite a lot of time last night roaming the Ashlands in search of the Urshilaku Buriel Chamber.... While doing so I came across an old Dunmer stronghold (can't recall the name but it behins with a K). Visiting there led me to some encounters with several creatures that have names beginning with "Dagoth." They look like they are wearing gas masks that have elephant-like trunks attatched to them and they use an assortment of magics including poison. Are these Ash Vampires or Ascended Sleepers? I tried soul trapping a couple and they fit into my grand soul gems though I had a variety in my pack, but they are only worth about 60 K.

Thanks for any info :)

I think those are ascended sleepers, you're talking about the tenticle faced beings right? When you kill them a sort of head thing falls on the floor and you can remove an amulet worth 2k that drains your personality?

You were probably in Kogoruhn, especially if you were in the northern ashlands, south of Urshilaku. Those "gas mask" guys were ash vampires. They're not usually a big deal. The ascended sleepers you asked about - they're big and shaped like a refrigerator and they've got tentacles. You'll know them when you see them. Also, they've got some pretty sweet spells on them. If you don't kill them right away they can lower all your stats, Dagoth-Ur style. Also, they're really great for some good constant effect enchantments, so make sure you have your soul trap handy!

Are their amulets (with some sort of negative effect) worth anything in the game, or am I safe selling them off?

In my experience, selling them off is safe. I have never run into anybody who wants them.

Thanks, Beornica! I just asked, like, 15 seconds ago.

The "Ascended Sleepers" model are the fat guys with tentacle-faces that fall off when you kill them - as described above. Sometimes they are given Dagoth names. The souls of these guys are good for CE enchantments. The "Ash Vampire" model are skinny gray guys with a single tube coming from their mouth that looks like a gas mask. I thought that this model was also used for Ash Zombies as well as many Dagoths in the game. There is a third model used for Dagoths that I've only encountered rarely - these guys scare the heck out of me. They look like some Egyptian Prince/Undead thing that moves pretty fast. <shudder>
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

Yes, I was indeed in Kogoruhn, and it seems the creatures I was asking about were ash vampires because when I used the gem for enchanting the CE option did not come up. Regarding having soul trap handy for when I do encounter ascended sleepers, well it so happens I just had a dagger enchanted with soul trap on strike, I called it Death's Servant :p

Thanks everyone for answering my question, that helps. If I follow the main plot a bit more from this point I have the feeling I will be meeting some ascended sleepers given that I now have to go and investigate the Sixth House.

Oh yes, I have wondered about those Sixth House Amulets, lol! not bad coin (2K) for something you wouldn't be keeping anyway.. unless you are trying to win a low charisma contest...

It's very strange how they use those Amulets as thier first line of "defense". Half of the time I'm able to kill the Sleepers before they even get around to attacking simply because they wasted time lowering their persona. :p

There is a point in the main story about those amulets, actually. The prophecy claims that Nerevar would win over the Ashlanders and Great Houses with his charisma, which is boosted with items such as The Moon-And-Star. Dagoth Ur, in contrast, would have the members of the Sixth House - not necessarily charismatic people anyway - lower thier personality points. Tis a strange thing.

What bugs me is those Ash Zombies and how thier eyes have been carved out of thier heads. :p

Dagoth Endis actually is only one monster, not a species. You've got Dagoth Ur, his seven Ash Vampires (Dagoth Ordrasal, ect), and his many underlings (Dagoth Endis, Dagoth Balur, ect...). Otherwise you've got Ash Ghouls (Which you're thinking of), Ash Zombies, Ash Slaves, and the Sleepers. :)

As far as I know you need a soul gem worth 80k for ce, which would have a 400 point soul. Gold Saints and Ascended Sleepers are both able to be used for ce. If the soul gem you're carrying can't ce something, I doubt it's an ascended sleeper. Though I don't know what it is you're talking about. -.-' I would guess it's an ash vampire.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

I don't think you can Soul Trap Ash Vampires, can you? I thought they were considered NPCs. Perhaps it was another type of Ash creature captured and mistakened.

In fact, I'm pretty sure these did shoot electric bolts, so that sounds about right. What is interesting though, is that I went into a dwelling at Kogoruhn, and found one of those same creatures with the tentacle gas mask thing but he was fatter and a slightly tougher battle than the skinnier versions in the main area. His soul was worth 66 K and of course not CE, and the souls of the smaller guys are worth 50 or 60 K, from what I remember, yet all held the "Dagoth" title. Curious indeed..... Different ranks maybe?
