When you import a character from BG1 to BG2, the game attempts to "level the playing field", so to speak. As a result, your character's experience will be reset to 89,000 points (161,000 if you're importing from Tales of the Sword Coast), his level will be adjusted accordingly, and his hit points will be...er, probably messed up, since the process has some bugs in it. Because BG2 has kits and a different way of assigning proficiency points, you will have the option to choose a kit, and you will have to reassign proficiency points.
You know what I think? Even though it's called "importing", what you're really doing is creating a brand new character who shares some attributes with your old character. If you want your new character to be exactly like your old character, you'll probably have to do some editing. I usually skip the importing process and go straight to the character editor.
If you want to see exactly how importing works, why don't you do a test run? You won't hurt anything.
