PC bugs?

Post by fable »

Just curious. I can't get the game to play in the PC version, but I suspect the reason is the now-notorious incapability with Radeon 9600 cards. The 1.01 beta patch is not getting raves on the Bioware boards (it is, after all, only a beta patch), so I'm waiting for final.

What's your impressions? If you can play the game, are the results more buggy than in Xbox?

As I mentioned elsewhere, I had a hell of a time due to issues with the SecuROM copy protection scheme causing near constant crashes. Since I started using the NoCD crack that hasn't been an issue.

Other then that I haven't encountered any bugs. Other people report some pretty severe ones, though. The main two (other then the video card issue you're already dealing with, Fable) are what appears to be a memory leak and extreme performance degredation (under 5 fps) even on high-end machines. Both issues have been reported frequently, but many if not most players seem to encounter neither.

Hello!

I just started playing last night and haven't had any problems so far.

I am running an unpatched version out of the box on my workstation (Dual Xeon 2.8 HT, 1 Gb PC3200, I-Will DPI533, Genuine ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, Terratec 6Fire 24/96, WinXP-SP1a). Resolution and visual candy is set at highest.

I've only gotten as far as the Lower City, but the game has been smooth so far. I haven't experienced the Radeon 9600-related crashes. I am running at stock speeds and with stock Catalyst drivers -- perhaps that has to do something with it.

Perhaps I'm just lucky or haven't played enought yet ...

PS. The game looks and feels sweet, although my right wrist is starting to hurt from using the mouse too much ... have to figure out the keyboard shorcuts :(

Well, the first official patch is out, so maybe you can solve some of your problems Fable.

As for bugs, the only one I've noticed is the memory leak, which could cause serious performance degradation over a period of playing.

Not yet. Lucasarts is still showing the 1.01 beta patch on their support site, and Bioware's boards are still discussing the "forthcoming patch." I'm not going to run a beta, especially since most people with Radeon 9600 cards are still experiencing memory leaks--not to mention the terrible frame rates that seem to span a variety of cards.

Oops, my mistake. I realized that Bioware only released the list of changes in the upcoming patch.

Heh. I only wish you were right. I paid for a PC game I can't even play, and the store chains won't let you return the product. It's been sitting here for nearly two weeks. In ye Olde DOS Days, a company would be hung, drawn and quartered for pulling such a stunt on their userbase, but nowadays, anything goes. :( I just hope Bioware gets the bugfix out the door, soon.

Where else (spoiler) are there nocd exe files?

The word "Crack" sounds less law- abiding than "nocd" does. Be that as it may, a major source for copies of exe's with the awful SecureROM crap peeled off isn't working (well, not like it did on my last visit). I tried half of the US mirrors at GameCopyWorld for a file on KotoR and got nothing but ads that never passed on the d/l process, every try.

This quote I found predates patches 1.02 and 1.03, but my processor is an AMD 1.3 -- I needed to get rid of SecureROM to ramp up to some decent speed from the game. It's a legal copy, but as long as that horrible SecureROM is in the way, it's next best to useless.

OK, this is a P.S. -> if you keep trying more mirrors, eventually one will do as it's supposed to, but all that would work are a lot slower than a year ago or so.
