Definitely! He's the top man on the field! I'm also hoping that FIFA change the rules regarding referee retirement at 45 since Collina won't apply for an excemption with the motivation "Referees are men of rules".

That is surely a strange rule, why should they have to stop when they are 45? If they are in a good condition and do there job good, why stop them...

I have no idea... actually, no one I have asked has had any good explanation for it. It's a rule. I guess they don't want people having heart attacks on the field. Or perhaps they just have prejudice against senior citizens.

Well I guess Holland had some luck with 1-1 against Germany. It's a relief that we still got 1 points out of this match.

Bah, the Netherlands aren't playing like they should or could be playing. I blame the coach and a few injured (: p) players for that.

We need a decent (defending) midfielder like Van Bommel who can win quite a few duals, has a good tactical insight and cane give a nice pass every now and then.
But mostly we need Seedorf back. The guy who has his sight on attacking, has a great pass, an even greater tactical insight and who can actually deliver a few balls on our attackers' plate.

And that's seriously missing in "our" team; a supply route to our attackers…

Yeah - Nistelrooy (sp?) showed his great abilities with that fantastic goal - how he ever managed to get the ball to fly in that direction is amazing :D
So if he could have been fed more passes, it could look very different.

But I still have fait in Holland. They are always a force to be counted on, especially in tournaments.
Latvia should be a walkover - eventhough they almost created a sensation against the Czech, but still....
And then there is the Chezch ... which are always dangerous....
All in all a very open group, but I still count Holland and Germany as the favorites to continue to the quater.

Holland played like Switzerland today. The passes were off. Heck they passed to german players instead some times. They were slow in responding, heck if they missed the ball being passed to them they just stood there. They didnt run after it, they werent aiming for the kill. I am not much of a football fan but i thought that Roy Makaay should have been subbed instead of Overmars. Also those long hop passes. They went so far ahead that they players couldnt reach them. The Dutch are lucky they got the draw. I feel germany were cheated even though i am a fan of the dutch team.

Hi Fas, how are you doing? :)

I think Germany played better football today, except for a few brief moments here and there, and the Dutch goal came in on such moment. The Germans are certainly the ones who should feel they lost a point in this game. However, well done Germany, like Xan I believe Germany and the Netherlands will qualify from group D (I missed the Czech-Latvia game though) and Germany demonstrated they are not as bad as German media has proposed! :D

Hey CE been along time. How is everything?

I agree Germany was by far the better team. That young kid, number 67 i believe. Some really long name starting with Sch (dont they all start with sch  ) he was bloody brilliant. Just seeing him near the goal was a moment for you to stop breating. And he was left undefended on 3 of the crosses to him. It was appalling.

Yeah they will pass through. I also missed that game because i was at work. However i heard it was pathetic. The Latvians were hand balling, and roughing it like it was rugby and not football.

Everything is very well with me Fas, my new position at the lab means I work more and travel more, but I also get to do more funny studies! :D What about you, are you an ambassador by now? :D

Hm, a lot of German names starts with Sch, has a couple of sch in the middle, and ends with sch, but I think I know who you are referring to. I hope for England v Germany in the finals!

I was surprised to see how offensive the Swedish team was yesterday against Bulgaria, although the final result was of course not fair. I never cheer for the Swedish national football team since they always make me fall asleep, but hopefully a different playing style will emerge from a team with several younger, promising players and the top forwards.

Sadly no....still a lowly research officer. Though now i get to go to WTO and UNCTAD meetings which is cool. Just hoping with the new people (3 officers from pakistan) coming in i get a sector or issue all for myself. More responsibility and specialization.

Work has been hectic and always is so i choose which matches i can see and watch. But i did get some glimpses of the Swedish match. Didnt seem all that entertaining. Oldly this cup seems to have some really boring matchs - Croatia and Swizterland as one i am honestly watching the top 4 teams. England, France, Holland and Germany. I wont be watching any of the other matches unless i have ample free time.

With your talent for diplomacy (undoubtably the best on this forum, which says quite a lot :D !) I am sure you will climb your way through the hierachy!

Work is hectic for me as well, and I will miss the quarterfinals due to a major international neuroscience conference. This week has been somewhat calmer though, so I have watched most games, although I fell asleep during the Croatia-Switzerland game :D

Now I must sleep, hope to see you soon again, Fas!

I have high hopes for the matches in group A today.

Spain and Greece can practically qualify if either of them wins the match today, so I would think that both teams really want to win this one, and well ... they need to score goals to win....
Also - Spain has a bone to pick with Greece in regards of the qualifying matches to Euro 2004 :D
My money is very much on the spanish for this match.
Unfortunally - draws are a decent result for both teams, although I think Greece will profit more from a draw then Spain, when looking towards the final matches in the group.

As for the second match, well - then both Portugal and Russia needs to win their match or practically be out of the tournament.
Especially Portugal with the final match in the group being against Spain, seriously needs to show something and win the match against Russia. Otherwise - they will not qualify to the quater finals.

So my hope is some intense and good football for today.
