Looking for people with different language versions of PS: T

Hey, you folks here seem to come from different countries, and, therefore, some of you probably have PS: T in various language versions. What I'm aiming at, is... I'd like to try different ones (I've already played in polish and english, now I'm giving it a try to play in french), but for the perfect effect... the proper sound file is needed, so that not only dialogues change, but also the speech!
As our mimir Platter (warm thanks to him

) told me, altering the voice.bif file should do. But it's almost 60 mb, so you can't probably find it online as easily as a normal patch.

Those of us who'd like to introduce this kind of enriching our entertainment, may be so kind to each other to send them copies of their files via ICQ or so. I dunno if I'll get any response to my post, but for me completely changing a language version seems a decent idea

You've showed that you're not altruistic at all in the field I need help

. Don't tell me none of you has even the ENGLISH version. After all, it's not a great burden to send it via ICQ and waste about 20 minutes on it :].

Heh, well... it doesn't :|

I've changed my "Voice.bif" in the main directory for the english "voice.bif" (for sure the names were identical), I've loaded a couple of saves, and....
I even didnt have the time to notice any difference (so, to hear any direct dialogue, xcept for the murmuring ambient) before the game stopped...
I had to reset it each time I loaded the next save.

So i dunno how to make it work. Maybe some more files need to be changed... voice.bif alone doesnt help.

P.S. If you have any ideas why, share your opinions

I don't know why the replacement files don't work. But here's a guess. I have two different releases of the game: the 4-CD U.S. version and the 2-CD U.S. version. The files are not interchangeable, probably because there are two different forms of compression being used. The 4-CD version of TORMENT.EXE can't read the files in the 2-CD version, and vice-versa. Perhaps something similar is happening when you try to mix different language versions. File sizes and line numbers and so forth might be different.

I don't know what else to suggest, but I hope you get it to work.

2 CDs vs 4 CDs

It seemed a brilliant idea, VonDondu, but... the voice.bif file Vicsun gave me was also from the 4CD version

So, definitely there's something more with this negative impact on the game. I dunno which files need to be changed, but definitely more than one..

Hm, that's disappointing.

It's probably because of the different file sizes of the sound files within voice.bif. The files in the BIFs are indexed by CHITIN.KEY. I was thinking this wouldn't be a problem because the files would all be named the same between the language versions but I forgot about their sizes. This probably causes the data in CHITIN.KEY to be invalid for a different language version of voice.bif. I don't think you'd be able to just take CHITEN.KEY from someone with the english version as well as their voice.bif because of other BIF files that are also different.

I can send you the actual extracted sound files from the english version that you could put in your override folder. In total they would still only be the same size as voice.bif itself, they just wouldn't all be in one neat file... I can zip them, send the zip to you and you could extract the zip into your override folder. Voice.bif has 1548 sound files but they are only 55mb in total.

I can't see a reason why this method wouldn't work, it's just not as fun/convenient as being able to swap a single file to do it. (Actually, if you knew how to use Near Infinity you could put all the english sound files into your version of voice.bif so you wouldn't have to keep all those files in your override folder. Then you'd effectively have an english voice.bif with a valid CHITIN.KEY to match. But let's forget I said that.).

So do you want to give me an ICQ# or something?

a) I dunno how to use Near Ifinity for now....

b) I wanna get those sounds. Even if they dont work in override, ill just have them for fun

Well, there's a couple of converters, as far as i know.... Anyway, the sounds would be perfect if they were used in the game - if they'll do so, there's really no need to make WAVs of them

It works

O.K. now the system works, I'm running a perfectly-English sound version! (though Annah's voice is a bit distorted, but who cares....).

If any of you wants English sound version, they need to put ACMs with all music files to the override folder, no need to change 'voice.bif'!

Conclusion:
1) If anyone wants to make his sound English, I can aid them

(have the right files)
2) If anyone would be so nice to try to provide me with the German, French or Swedish version, those ACM files should do, not the 'voice.bif'. And I, of course, strongly encourage you to share your versions (not only with me), that's quite a new experience (how the voices can alter everything), though in my case its not so urgent anymore, lol

no, dude, i mean the sound. it's like over-amplified.. it's as if you added a couple of decibels, distorting it. But it doesnt matter, really, i wont fuss because of such a detail. I'll checkthe single wavs to fnd out if the original ones are also distorted (well, they should be).

P.S. it refers only to some of the sounds with her voice.

So, you're saying that by putting the new language ACM files in the override folder makes your sounds of that language, fine.
What about the written part of the game?
I'm pretty sure you'd have something to do about those dialog.tlk and dialogf.tlk, but I guess that's not all that's needed. If those only change dialog, you'd have to override files for item descriptions, journal, quest log, floating text... Damn. It migh just be easier to buy the other language's version, if you ever manage to find it.
Anyways I'm willing to try it, but we'll have to hunt for donators

I just got to know beforehand what's needed to change the written text in the game.
Another thing, do I require to have those files from a 4cd version if I have this one? That would restrict a bit the choices we have, but maybe inthe other languages the 2cd version was never made.

The french dialog files available on the warparadise site work well, and you were right, they change every written text in the game. Another thing, I've seen on their forum that DarkXan is making a fix to correct translation errors. He said he was finished and was working on a way to create an updater for it instead of giving big dialog files, so those dialog.tlk/dialogf.tlk on the site might contain the corrections as the file has been updated today. So, you might want to check this.

Now about the sound part. I need to know exactly which files are needed so I don't trouble those people much. What we know is that it's the acm files that are needed, but of what Platter said I think he extracted them from the voice.bif file. So, the solution would be to ask for the voice.bif file and then make the extraction ourselves.

I'm going to see if I can learn to "use" Near Infinity to at least be able to extract those files properly.

Edit : Actually, there is a program named Winbiff that extracts the files from it, but it requires the chitin.key to do it. So, to have those files I would need to ask for both files, as iirc, chitin.key is different for each version.

For the voices the files you want are every single ".WAV" file in voice.bif.

For testing, I have extracted all the wav files from voice.bif using Winbiff and put them all in the override folder. It works so far, so I guess winbiff did what it had to do successfully. The only problem I have is that I'm not able to create a new bif file with all the wavs using winbiff, so I can have a new bif with the test wavs and have the chitin.key updated accordingly. I'm not able to create a new bif with Near Infinity either, it fails in the process. That's all pretty wierd, but it's irrevellant to the fact the we can/can't have the french version. So I guess what's left to do is to ask for the files

Then, I'll extract the wavs for the bif, test them, and if it works, zip them and send them to you.
