Best way to beat Galeb Duhr

Post by fishhead76 »

I can't seem to hit these guys.

And my spells are not working very good.

What is better fire or lightning?

thanks

Those buggers are very resistant. I suggest this... use an "Entangle" spell then beat them to death with a magic polearm (at least +2 flaming or better) and a ring of freedom of movement - keeps you out of thier attack range... and your spell casters can use shatter, fireball, etc... and of course of the two spells you mention Fireball works better against them than lightning.

Funny, I found that the opposite was entirely true. My fireballs hardly did squat to them, while my Lightening Bolt and Chain Lightening (the latter via a wand) were close to miracles.

Yes, you're correct I'm sorry I wrote that backwards - Lightning is the better choice when it comes to damage - Galeb Duhr have a Spell resistanace 15, Subdual immunity, Poison Immunity and fire resistance 15. Lightning does more damage to them... but my personal tactics have always been to fireballs as I always entangle them when I enter the room to keep them at bay - I don't waste the Chain lightning wand on them since it's the only one in the game. Lightning bolt is a directional spell so I pound them with fireball from a wizard, being an area spell, because it normally hits all of them at once. If I have a druid I also will use call lightning - another area spell (but it doesn't cover as much area). There are about a dozen of them in that room and four in another - they have 8d8+50 HD and an AC of 2 - the entangle makes them easy to hit with a fighter type PC with a good magic weapon - with a mighty cleave and/or whirlwind attack they actually do more damage in a round than any spells.

I have had the best effect with the wand of chain lightning. I can't think of a better encounter to use that wand--I never needed it until I faced these guys.

kill em all

The easiet way to kill them is with cone of cold. Chain lightning works 2nd best.

I had a FTR party witout mages in this combat once and it was close to imossible for me, but my Rouge did it it with wands and 4 Ftr's banging up on them one on one in the bottleneck entraces to them.

A Spell heavy party should do this just fine, especially with 1/2 power swords. (Frag/Scather)

:p

another solution

I think you can use the spell soften earth and stone on them to weaken their armor...there's still that nasty spell resistance problem, though. As I said earlier, cone of cold is by far the easiest way to kill them. Chain lightning, call lightning storm, call lightning, and lightning bolt will also work (in descending order of usefullness).

The easist, Cheapest, Longest way to kill the node bosses.

Yes they are spell resistant but, Having mages with Magic missle and hieghten spell works well. You need a cleric that can command undead. Get shadow monsters, Place the a good distance from any node boss. Node bosses like to use things like fear but undead are immune to it and bosses like to recast it. Bosses dont move from thier spot so they would stay a good distance away. Then just mm it to death, Run and rest again if you have to. It'll take him out eventually.
