Some Early Questions

Post by Biedronka »

I just started playing yesterday as a mage. A few questions: How do I put skill points into alchemy that's so recommended? I don't see any on my skills list. Also, is selling high-priced items always this hard? I'm only in the first town, but I can't sell all the axes I found while looking for Slasher b/c none of the NPC's have enough money (or items I want). Thanks!

Alchemy probably has a level requirement higher than you are right now. I'm pretty sure there's a button in the skills interface that allows you to see all skills, even if you're not high enough yet.

Yes, selling things is often a pain in the game, especially early when Aleroth is your only option. Just stash the axes somewhere in the meantime.

As I recall, the first level of alchemy can be taken at once, when you start a game--though I advise against it. Since all our early efforts will be spent in an underground tomb, you won't have any need to extract potions from herbs.

Just click under any skill to add a single level of it.

The first level of alchemy allows you to combine potions, which is useful almost right away.

I've got alchemy now!

Thanks guys - I just didn't realize one could scroll through other character skill paths and use some of the skills. I've got alchemy lvl 2 now, but don't seem to be able to turn anything into potions. I'll have to look into it...
The first level of alchemy allows you to combine potions, which is useful almost right away.SWC
But combining potions in the very early portion of the game actually cuts their effectiveness. For example, you can combine a small health and a small mana potiton to make a small restoration potion, but it only gives you back a percentage of the health/mana you had before. And that percentage, based on your starting and early values, is actually a smaller amount than the real number return of separate health and mana potions.

Later in the game, when you start raising your health and mana through stat increases and items, that changes. But in the early game...? Stick with drinking straight red and blue potions, health and mana, respectively. And don't spend a valuable skill point yet on alchemy. ;)

OK - I have the alchemy skill (level 3) but I still don't see it working. I place an empty flask over an herb (mushroom...) and it just sends the flask back to my inventory. What am I doing wrong? I'd love to utilize all the herbs I see in the game, but there's nothing I can do at the moment!

The higher your skill is, the bigger the potions you can make. I'm guessing you're using a flask that is too big for your skill level. So try again with a smaller flask.

Another point: the visual field for error is rather small. If the mushroom underneath the flask isn't highlighted, you won't get a potion. That's even if the flask is right over the mushroom.

Note that in some cases, only part of a mushroom patch will highlight. That means more than one flask of the size you're currently using can be made into potions on the present patch.

Dunedain, can you post your question under it's own thread? This thread is reserved for a different poster's question. "Kidnapping" a thread is considered a lack of courtesy. I'll be happy to reply under a new thread. Thanks. :)
