Timed quests or limits?
I'm nearly ready to pay the gold to the thieves to end ch 2. Any pros or cons to doing this early or later? Any advantage of doing this quickly or finishing up quests first?
Are there any quests or NPC's (other than Korgan's Book quest 9in the tombs) that will end badly if not finished in a time limit?
Thanks, Jere

I prefer paying later, because that makes less chance to be attack by vampires on the street.

I usually complete most of the quest, but leave the Windspear Hill(?) to the last. Then, I pay the money, get a nice Amulet of Power from the theives' boss, and then go to the Windspear, as there are a lot of undeads there.

I don't think the quests in chapter 2/3 have any time limit. There are some in the later in the game, but you receive the warining clearly (ie. "next 24 hours" or within next 3 days" kind of way), so I don't think you would miss them. They are not in the quest where you are at the moment.Originally posted by Jere:

I'm not sure what happens if you add someone with a timed quest, like Korgan, to your party, and then pay off the thieves and quickly run through into Chapter 4. It's possible he'd leave your party as soon as you get back in Chapter 6, but I don't know.
This time through, I tried waiting on most of the Chapter 2 quests until I came back, allowing Imoen to take part in them and gain some useful experience. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the level of monster in several of the Chapter 2 dungeons were seriously upgraded when attempted later in the game.

My thanks to Minerva and Fable for your replies. I guess my main question is whether to rescue Imonen as quickly as posible or wait and do more quests to get the exp and higher levels first? I guess if I want to give more xp to Imoen I should try getting her back quickly.
I'm assuming that all the quests received in ch 2/3 will still be there after Imoen is rescued, right?
Thanks for the feedback.

Oh, yes. None of them vanish. Taking Imoen through chapter 2 after acquiring her provides more chances for her advancement, which is good. On the other hand, if you jump to the later chapters before doing most of the chapter 2 quests, and set your difficulty level to hard or insane, you'll find yourself challenged--which may or may not be a good thing, depending upon how you prefer to play. I'd also suggest getting the Shield of Balduran before hitting those later quests, just as a very slight hint. It's not vital, but it is useful.Originally posted by Jere:

Fable, Thanks again. I'm hoping to take Imoen back in after rescuing her. I guess that's the main question: How much of ch 2/3 should be done and what items are most useful or needed to have before going on to ch 3, 4 or 5?
I took Nalia in as a replacement mage/thief but if I advance her too much I know I won't want Imoen back. One of those tough choices, I guess.
My party is fairly strong but a bit weak on healing/cleric right now, and I have Lilacor for my lead Paladin, Flail of Ages or +2 Chaos 2HS for Minsk, several +3 axes for Korgan, Keldorn's +2 Sword for him, Tuigan Bow for Nalia and some decent stuff for Jaheira.
Any recommendations?
Thanks again,
Jere (looking for a decent pseudonym

I've done te same as fable.
Just run through Nalia's Keep, some other minor quests just to collect the money, and
run to rescue Imoen!!
You can do all the quests later, with her.
And it seems more realistic, they kidnap her,
and you wait months before helping her?
The game can be more difficult in some points, but just take a look at the Baldurdash site!!!
If he finished the whole game with a pure mage...

Imoen'd be adjusted somehow if you'd find her having your level high enough. I do not take part in widespread disliking of Nalia and usually keep them both. Nalia, as rule, is my most high-ranking mage that time (if my PC isn't single mage himself) and there is no alternative save if you can tolerate Edwin (i can't). Not sure about ToB, but in second part of SoA you have second to nothing of thief's tasks Imoen can't do - with exception of setting traps, of course, and as a mage she can reach even cap level if you have patience enough.Originally posted by Jere:

As for Asylum Dungeon, most of monsters should be roughly adjusted to your level (except some fixed NPC and trap situations, what rather easy if you are high enough and on guard). Irenicus might be a bit more sort of problem, though, but, again, you'd advance in levels while bellow, wouldn't you?
There are, IMHO, some items you definitely should obtain before going down there, the Daystar (and Cel.Fury if you have somebody to wield) not the last.

I didn't have any of the "specials" when jumping over chapter 2 to Spellhold, this time around. (Well, nothing except the stuff that came off my successful transactions with the Thieves Guild: the +2 Ring of Protection, etc.) My PC was a sorc, and I kept Jan until I found Imoen. (This is my "good" team. My "evil/neutral" team thought Imoen looked stylish in the dungeon where she was, and stuck with Jan.) I sold and repurchased the summoning and fire wands you acquire at the beginning of the game. Cernd and and Anomen provided more spell power. (I still think both are inferior to Jaheira and Viconia, but I wanted to try characters I've never walked through the game with.) Keldorn was kept around for sententious atmosphere.
The way I'd set things up, my game was one of carefully controlled magic rather than brawn--though it's surprising just how much of a tank Anomen is after he gets some better armor, while Cernd is still something of a wimp even after acquiring his Greater Wolfwere shape. They died a lot, especially since I used the insane difficulty mode, but it was fun.
A couple of quests you might consider doing before jumping off the Spellhold: the D'Arnise Stronghold, and the Cult of the Unseeing Eye. The former offers a couple of fine items and some very nice enchanted ammunition, plenty of it, so you don't need to buy all those +1 and +2 bullets for your spellcasters in town. The latter has a few nice items, both weapons and stat adjustments. (I'll tell you exactly which if you want the spoiler.) I would also suggest filling up a couple of useful wands, though you can get through Underdark without 'em if you *only* get the Matron's blood sample from the Sahuagin. (They're aqueous wimps.)

*** Very Minor Spoilers ***
If you have downloaded the bonus merchants, one of them has the Shield of Balduran for sale that gives you a tremendous advantage in the Unseeing Eye quest and the Beholder Hive in the Underdark.
Also try to finish the Trademeet quests. You get the Shield of Harmony there that really helps in some situations.
Finally, get either the Staff of Rhynn or the Improved Mace of Disruption (or Carsomyr or the Staff of the Magi...) before going to the Underdark, as there's a creature there that can only be hit by +4 weapons or better.

Decisions, Decisions.
The beauty of this game Jere is its' replayability. I'm pretty certain everyone here has been through the game several times. Everyone is correct. You can do what you want when you want. I've taken two approaches:
1. I know which NPC's I want to go through the game with so I go find them and go get Imoen asap and get back to do all the remaining quests on the mainland. This group benefits from the same core of characters getting all of the experience.
2. I freelance and try to use all of the NPC's and their associated quests. I mix and match NPC's doing all the quests offered and from there figure out my group to take to the underdark and then through the rest of the game. If NPC's die, they die. I usually loot them and move on to someone else.
Just play the game however you want. If you haven't been through the game completely once, I'd recommned avoiding the temptation of this website. There is far too many spoilers running rampant.
If you're surviving, you're doing well and playing the game exactly as it should be played.

Thanks again to Littiz, Lordweiller, Fable, Xyx, (great spellcasting website!) and Ned for the informative replies.
I've gone into ch 3, killed Firkraag, gotten Carsomyr and decided to get the daystar before going on to ch 4.
I'm not sure where to find the Mace of Dis, but have been dealing with the vamps, wraiths and such pretty well without it. That would be a nice weapon for Anomen though - better than his current +2 mace.
I also have not DL'ed the add-ons so don't have the option for the Sheild of Balduran yet.
Again, thanks for the very useful responses. It seems the game adjusts for levels in most places anyhow, so I'm just going on to seek Imoen ASAP, after tidying up a few loose ends.
Happy Thanksgiving to all,
Jere

After you've done the Copper Coronet quests, get The Sleeper +2 there. It has an excellent side effect, and is even cheaper than most plain +2 weapons.
*** Mace of Disruption Spoiler Warning ***
You'll find the Mace of Disruption +1 in one of the blood pools in Bodhi's lair (not far from the entrance). If you side with Bodhi, it's simply there for the taking.
After you complete the Unseeing Eye quest, the Temple of Helm will ask you to find illithium ore for some snobby artist. Keep the real ore for yourself.
Take the ore and the mace to Cromwell. He will make the Improved Mace of Disruption +2.
