The BG Roleplaying Aspect 1:Characters and NPCs

Post by GREEN SPHERE »

Hey all I've read some of your posts on npcs and the like and I was wondering whether creating someof your own characters can even the situation up (with a reason of course).

Well as I heard from several ppl that there arent any real good theives in bg. Most of which have either dual classed to mages or have really annoying personalities. Well.........wouldnt making your own theif even up the tables? If there are any serious rpers there, then making a thief via the multiplaying way would hurt. REASON: the game starts off with the main character in a prison cell and he only remembers being jumped near Baldurs Gate a while after Sarevok's fall. Well, you CAN say (through the mplayer char creation) that the main character met this guy after the battle with Sarevok and then ETC ETC ETC

this post would probably sound stupid to most ppl but i would welcome and flames/ideas to this um.....queer post ;)

I'm not sure I follow your line of thought here. Can you elaborate.

@Craig, who's wingeing? Nobody's whining, here.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Well I follow your line of thought and see no problems with that. However there is one good singleclass thief whom yoo meet early on, Yoshimo. Having him join makes the game better imo.
On the other hand my favourite class is the halfling fighter/thief. Then you can always argue that the halfling doesn't fit in to the story and so on so maybe your better of having Yoshimo in your party.

Not a problem with having a bad thief in the game since I play one. For me there are one of the better PC around that match my style. I liked the option of borrowing things. But playing A thief (pure class) And then looking at the so called thiefs in the game yes they do have there limits.

Opps and by the way welcome to the board :D

God imagine if the ToB character had been *another* character with thief skills. How dull would that have been.

Making your own stories is part of RPGs. I see no wrong with adding a PC. However, the NPCs in BG2 are what makes it such a great game and by creating an extra PC of your own, you'll miss out on one of these. Jan is all the Thief you'll ever need and IMO both the most versatile and the most amusing NPC. Nalia and Imoen will both be enough to complete SoA and ToB.

If you really want a pure Thief I'd rather recommend you to cheat a bit so you'll be able to keep Yoshi the whole game through.

GreenSphere,
You mention in your topic RPG of characters and NPC's. Just throwing my two cents in :)

I usually am firmly in the NPC side of BG2. I love the dialogue, the strengths and weaknesses, the uniqueness of each character...

But, I am just now starting a new game entirely multiplayer (just have to finish a few sound files - those 'wav' things). My plan is to add characters at planned times, to make the story flow. Though I've not put this into practice, I believe you could remove and add multiplayer characters at any time during the game? You could add your thief say at the exit from the prison into the promenade. Roleplaying this would be the fact that you hired the thieves services as a guide after they tried to pick pocket you ( You looked an easy mark, seemingly confused upon entering a new city.) ;) :) Or you could go with your own story line :)

So, no, no flames from here.

cool vivien you have a point.

right now,im building a sort of "storyteller" program that lets the person create his own adventures using the baldurs gate engine. it will include the modifiying of certain models, plot windows popping at certain stages, music in line with the event and a building manager (allows you to create a building and place it, or you can use the buildings in the game) it should be out around febuary at fileplanet ot teambg (if they get their act together no offense to anyone) it it around 12 MB (i know i seemed to have gotten off topic but i just had to announce my project sorry to all)
oh yeah and i forgot to mention, if the storyteller wants, he/she can make character dialogs at a certain trigger.

thanks for allowing me to bore you with my useless waste of words

whats better any of the paladin class kits or a monk?

Have fun and sounds very interesting :)

*Thinks to herself that she was all proud that she had the computer skills to make her own sound files, forgetting that there are others who actually build parts of games* ;)
