I'm currently playing as a level 20 sorceror/7 RDD. I've been soloing for the whole game, and breezed through most of it with no problems. However, I finally got to mephisto, and I can't even damage him. I get the weapon ineffective thing when I try to hit him, even though I have a +10 weapon, and his magic damage reduction blocks all of my spells even if I do get past the spell resistence.
Any suggestions?
HotU Can't damage mephisto
After what I can see, he has a soak +5/25, so first you need to have +5 to hit him (or 25 damage will be absorbed), secondly, he has resistance of 20 to each damage type (piercing, slashing, blunt). So even with a +5 or greater, you'd still get 20 damage absorbed.
How my own sorcerer beat him (the only time I fought him with a sorcerer), was by using the high level summon "Black Blade of Disaster". I was lucky there and killed him fast (2 attack rounds) due to him rolling a fortitue save of 1+40 = fail
However, I think you would have to reply on henchmens somewhat to hold his interest, possible summons (Moderkins Sword, or other), or use some sort of transformation spells - Tensers Transformation, Shapechange etc.
He is very hard to beat, but not impossible, but he is harder for a spell caster then a warrior type in my oppinion. (My fighter/weaponmaster/barbarian just wiped the floor with him together with Deekin, even with Aribeth turning against me (so I wacked her also)).
So basically - use high level summons, henchmen, transformation spells and see if you can meele him down. I don't think many spells does a lot of damage to him, because of his very high save throws. (and because the guy has about 600-700 hitpoints)
Also a little pointer, when you damage him, he turns the whole area into lava/fire - you can then use the grabbeling hand to teleport up to one of the higher platforms, and avoid it.
Good luck, and I hope some of this information helps a little.

Easy, it's called Acid. Thats the only damage he is not resistant to. You can also cast death spells and hope he rolls a one (which my balor summon did ). Just remember to have a large stock of healing potions.
"Heya! Have you been to Baldur's Gate? I've been to Baldur's Gate... Oops, stepped into something. Have you stepped into something?"
Thanks for the help. I unfortunately have no spells that do acid damage, since both melf's acid arrow and mestil's acid sheath suck, and I don't have any henchmen. Plus the only summon spell I have is greater planar binding, since I spent my level 9 slots of time stop, wail of the banshee and shapechange.
Maybe I'll just play through act three again, and take another level of sorceror so I can get a stronger summon and some acid damage.
PS-Isn't he immune to death magic?

He is not immune to death magic, he just has high saves, and therefor rarely fails them.
I killed him by using the Black Blade of Disaster where he failed a fortitude on hit, which destroyed him (remember a roll of 1 equals fail, no matter how much bonus there is).
Strangely enough -then the spell description in NwN dosen't speak of this feature, but BG2's desciption of the spell does

So I can just hit him with fingers of death and wails of the banshee until he goes down?
Niiiice

Well on my tollset he has a fort save of 38, so if you have about 54 CHA, then rolling a 2 with Finger of Death will also kill him.
It may be worth freeing *spoilers* Aribeth *end spoilers* in that chapter and upgrading her sword at the smith with acid damage. And don't forget about scrolls and wands.
