how many times have you gone through the game and with what character type?
it's the first time going through the game for me, and I would like some idea's fore next time.

...if you've played former D&D-games I'd try a new class like Monk (famous one!) or Sorcerer ('Spell-Gatling'). Try some nice kit like Bounty Hunter or Undead Slayer, Blade or Stalker. Of course you could take some real 'hard' kits like Jester but I doubt the fun of it...
The game's beatable with all classes (even soloing) and doesn't depend on your class...

I'm still on my first, but with the F/M/T I ran through BG1...
I find it's a great utility character; I use the NPC's as my straight classes who can advance real high...
I'm a better fighter than most mages and thieves, and a better mage than most thieves and fighters...
It also lets me lead the way...high Charisma...plus the thief abilities to detect traps, open locks, etc...
Level limits with XP cap kinda sucks though...
I went LSword, Katana and Bow...
Now I use Celestial Fury, Elven Court Bow and Daystar occasionally...
My good stuff goes to my NPCs..
