I have played BaldursGate with others but it was all rather boring and simple chit-chat but has anyone tried to play in character? Is it something alot of people do or what? I would like to try it but not end up looking like a dork.

:-/.... Baldur's Gate isn't really good if you want to role-play. I don't even enjoy multiplayer BG or NWN. Just play tabletop D&D (or a game like Deus Ex) when you want to role-play, and Baldur's Gate when you want to powergame.
