Paladin Vs kensai/Mage

Post by tigergutt »

First of all, I know that you cannot compare two classes based on equipment. But a Paladin IS his Holy Avenger. A paladin with no Avenger is no Paladin at all. So i am making this argument based on that fact.

I have played the game with the Kensai mage , and the game with the Paladin.

The best of the two classes in my opinion is the Paladin. Have anyone read the description for the holy avenger! Dispells Magic upon each succesfull hit?!
There is not a mage in the game that lasts more than 4-5 rounds.

The Kensai/Mage is powerfull and can be a bit more interesting to play.
But I would choose the Paladin any day.

The most powerfull Character class in D&D will always be the paladin with his Holy Avenger - Hands Down!

It's hard work being a holy man - sigh!
Paladins forever!

I have played through as a ranger and now an undead hunter and i must say that paladins rock, the undeadhunter especially, another thing that is also over looked by people is the really low saving trows of paladins, when maxed out my undead hunter's highest throw was about 5 Image

I think i will try a monk next time through
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

Hey Tigergutt! Whether the paladin is the best character in D&D or not...this question can't be answered at all. Sure he's VERY powerful, but here only in terms of this game. Ever played p&p-RPGs? Playing a paladin is MUCH MORE work than goin' round crushing some foes and...oops!...finding a Holy weapon+5, not even from a dragon and if so, not at all after such easy quests. In fact it's the most challenging but frustrating and unrewarding task at all...

I have had my share of the regular D&D dungeon crawls. Been playing for 5 or 6 years now.

For this game I would say that the paladin is the most powerfull. That is based on my experience with both the kensai/mage and the Paladin.

In regular p&p I know that playing a Paladin is not just running around crushing heads with a holy sword that you just found lying around somewhere.

The only thing i am saying is there is no worse foe to face in battle than the Paladin and his Holy avenger , p&p that is. When is boils down to survival in battle, the Paladin will be the last man standing.

Having beaten the game with two paladin kits (cavalier and inquisitor) i can now tell that i could use a paladin in BG2 even without the Holy Avenger. In fact, when i started the game for the first time and saw the paladin kits descriptions,i was sure that they are going to work great in the game.So i created a new cavalier and jumped into action.I didn't know at that time, that Carsomyr even existed-i only found out when i loot the dead body of Firkraag.
Of course i dont't underestimate the power of the Holy Avenger. But i have to state that onn my first run i use it very little because i hadn't pick up enough skill points for two handed swords and weapons so i couldn't use it effectively.
Since this is roleplaying we are talking about, every player should pick up a character which suits him/her best. For my first try on CPRGs i always pick up a paladin-doing so for more than 15 years.
Right now i have two different games running :o ne with an undead hunter (want to try all paladin kits) and one with six PCs created by me to try other new classes and kits-barbarian,monk,priestess of Helm,kensai/mage,sorceress.From what i have seen(middle of the game),the monk class
seems interesting from a role-playing point of view.

Most of the time when i play with a paladin i give him a shield and a nice longsword (although in bg2 i gave my cavelier celestail fury and cromfaeyr). The avenger is of course very kewl but i dont like the speedfactor (i gave keldorn tha weapon)

but if you get 2 points in 2handed mastery, it will reduce the speed factor to 1, so nothing to complain over there Image

Yo tigergutt! Really didn't want to insult ya! Mea culpa, sorry for that. I only don't like extreme opinions about characters, like best or not or most powerful and stuff. I agree with you that a Paladin (with the Holy Avenger or not) is a regular fortress. But always more burden than I can take.
