clerics and lack of wisdom

Post by dostari »

I have a party of 3 pure clerics and 1 ftr 4/cleric X. One of the pure clerics and the ftr/clr have only wisdom 14 and the pure cleric of course can't cast his level 5 spells (chars are all about level 9-10). OK, stupid me, I didn't plan very well. I haven't played in a year and got the urge so I installed and whipped up a party with too little thought.

Of course, I plan to keep adding to their wisdom on level-ups (started with 12), but these 2 guys are going to be behind the spell curve, especially the pure. Even my other 2 clerics might fall behind as I think they are wisdom 16 or so.

Here's my question: is it possible to continue on as I am, or will these chars become too weak? Because the one has 4 fighter levels, his spells will come slower anyway - I think he's only got level 3 spells for now.
If they will fall too far behind in spells, is there any way to salvage the situation?

Also, is my party makeup in general a bad idea? I've always wanted to try an all-cleric party, but don't know if the later chapters will become too hard. Animate undead, of course, is the spell of choice. Cast 3-4 of those guys as a frontline, and start shooting ranged stuff from behind. Very effective. Even Sherincal (just defeated her this morning) wasn't much of a threat using this technique.

Appreciate any constructive advice. I love this game, but I'm not exactly an expert. I've only ever got as far as early chapter 5.

One more thing: I'm thinking about buying Icewind Dale original. Is it as much fun as IWD2 and BG2 (have both)? Will it be as much fun? What dnd rules does it use?

Thanks!

well every god ring boosts your wisdom by 5... but you can only buy one from nathaniel in kuldahar... i ques you should be ok...

IWD 1 uses same rules as BG1...
IWD 1 is pretty much same as IWD 2 only real diference is that in iwd1 you will have resolution of 600x400 if i remember right... but for me it looks like 300x200...

What annoys me about Icewind Dale 1 is that each class has weapon restrictions. I much prefer the whole proficiency thing. My party usually consists of a Greatsword-wielding Sorceress and a Druid with a Longbow, yet in Icewind Dale 1 this is not possible, without multiclassing. Also, SPOILER COMING UP, the final fight is pretty annoying as you need basically a party consisting of fighters as everyone is magic resistant, sigh.

I did the same, got IWD after playing through IWD2. I agree with talyn on the weapons thing, each class has restrictions and you only have a few points to choose proficiencies with. SPOILER I also found it annoying how a few major battles ended randomly and switched to a story video, leaving you wondering "Uh, did I kill him?" until the story tells you of his defeat. All in all the game isn't totally useless, and is more fun if you play through the expansions Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster. It takes a little getting used to if your used to IWD2 rules and the sort.

what dietys do the clerics serve? in any case my sratigy most of the middle game was run!!! I say the best cleric spell is anamate dead so only 14 wisdom won't matter much. I didn't like IWD1 much 2nd end rules and to much Killing.

Also you can do the cheating tactic.
Get dale keeper and modify your wisdom so that you take a point away from some other skill. That's not really legal, but if you get stuck and really want to get more wisdom quickly i think that this is the best way to do it.

16 wisdom should be good for a start for clerics but 14 is definitely a little low. You can get up to three Every God Rings (+5 Wisdom) in a game of IWD2 though so I would just start leveling another class besides cleric.

What you could do, I suppose, is multi-class your Cleric into a Druid, or a Ranger or something, that way you have access to low level Cleric and low level Druid spells, making the character slightly less useless?
But, yeah, I'd go for the DaleKeeper switching the stats around idea if all else fails. I can't see how it's really cheating aslong as you take a point or two off of something else.

You should look out with that though. If you lower intelligence, you should have gotten less skill points. If you lower constitution, you should have gotten less hitpoints and lower fortitude saves. If you lower dexterity, you should also lower you reflex saves.

Agreed, it would be easier to just continue advancing and put all your extra points into wisdom. Or just start over.

I suppose it would. Up to you, it depends on whether it's more effort to start over, continue until you get more ability points or to change your stats and make sure there are no repercussions, saving throw, etc,-wise.

It's not really that hard, I was just saying that when you do it, you should take those things into consideration.
