Lareth's Staff of Striking is a sufficient weapon for a Cleric (without a weapon focus from, say, the War domain) or a Druid. The breastplate is suggested for a character that can wear medium armor, and is best for a Dwarf, since their movement speed does not change from wearing the armor. Lareth's magic ring protects against movement-hindering spells, such as Web or Entangle, though whether you need to identify the item to use that or not is uncertain.
The rest of his equipment is meant to be sold. However,

If you sell it to Rannos or Gremag Davi in northern Hommlet (assuming that they will still trade with your party), it will eventually trigger an encounter which you give you a nifty amount of experience AND a few pieces of decent equipment. Besides, how does having a +2 longsword sound when your characters are about level 5?

The best thing to sell to those traders are the shoes, they are cheap and dont do anything anyway. The encounter always comes for me the next time I travel after selling the item, which can be difficult if your party is only level three or so.[/QUOTE]
Agreed. Besides, the necklace fetches a cartload of money at the jeweler in Hommlet.
Usually, my crew is level 4 or 5 after clearing the moathouse, so it is a hint of a challenge, but not nigh-unto impossible, which is just the way I like it.
