Well what about Sarevok or Imoen
if you cared... and you read what happens to the characters after Tob it says that Sarevok becomes a hero by single handedly annihilating an orc horde or somthing and then one day disapears I am interested in what happens to him.
and then Imoen Starts her own thieve's guild in some city i forgot which. But that smells of game pottential right there

Unfortunately if you followed them directly, you'd again be stuck at uber-high levels. Now, if you were a member of Immy's guild...I especially want that instance where (highlight for spoiler) they take on the dragon because he was rude.

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
I could definitly see your meeting some of the NPCs from BG2 as they follow their paths as described in the game endings. If done correctly, I could see that as being very, very cool...perhaps even a brief meeting with the PC from the first two games. You could clarify through a few dialogue choices what your character was like in the first two games (much like what is being done with KOTOR2) and then maybe meet, or at least see your old character.
Would be interesting if nothing else .
You mean, it takes place during the first two games, and during it, you hear much about what's going on, but your player character follows his/her own storyline?
(sorry if this is old..) That would be really cool, following someone like Minsc, maybe infact Boo is a space alien! and gets minsc into some stupid situation.. or have Edwin lead the wizards of thay, but have some secret quest.
Thing is, in Baldurs Gate II ToB they concluded all of the characters, they said that Edwin took control of the red Wizards but was killed by another up coming wizard, etc with a lil story for each character you played.
So thats out the question, but it would be nice to do something with someone you met in Baldurs Gate, although I really can't think of anyone worth while.
Maybe you could play as Balduran, or the game could be a whole load of kinda mini adventures, like you play as elminster, Gorian, Durlag, etc, and do a bunch of quests, although you would lose all the substantial character development, and it would be almost another Fallout Tactics.

I'm sorry if this has been done to death, and I can see that there are definitely two sides here. One consisting of people who want some form of continuation, which I think will make for a boring game, and can and will be viewed as a cop out (by me at least). Then there are those of us who would like the new game to have nothing whatsoever to do with the previous games. It can easily done by picking a completely new location and timeframe. This will eliminate all possibilities of connections between games. But I'm sure that when the time comes someone will have a great idea and there will be people skilled enough to realize it.

Just a personal preference, but I agree that it would be nice to find out what happened with all the characters at the end of the second game and just take for example a lackey of Sarevok and he gradually works his way through the game and meets almost all the characters that appeared during the first two games: those that are dead and still alive.
Maybe, Gorion comes back and has some sort of news about the hero from the first two games.
But these are all just thoughts and a personal preference in a lot of cases.

I find that the epilogues in ToB informed us quite fine as to what happened to the NPCs after the game ended.
I'm fine with a new location and the like, but I think it should have something to do with the previous game, at least a cameo or something, or a reference. To call it Baldur's Gate III, when it will, in fact, have nothing to do with the previous games (not even remotely), is a cheap marketing ploy that I don't appreciate.

Well .... as for the name.
It is only a name, if they stay "true" to the BG-series concept, I have no problem with them naming the game Baldurs Gate 3.
The problem comes if they make a game that is "unlike" the previous in concept - and call it BG, then they are trying to recapitalize.
After all, besides following the same character - Baldur's Gate 2 didn't have much to do with the city of Baldur's Gate, either

Agreed. Hopefully it does not happen.
I think the main thing is that you can take a part from the game and just go from there with a RPG. This is probably one of the main reasons that I like them so much, there is normally a way to carry on for the next one.

How does this sound? Make the game take place somewhere else and maybe a generation or two later and have those random books some of us liked to collect and horde in our favorite cache chronicle the tales of the bhaalspawn saga. That should keep those of you who want some continuation, closure, or whatever you wanna call it happy, while at the same time allowing for something completely new and fresh. Possibly starting out as a young child hearing tales of these adventurers and asipiring to become an adventurer yourself. No particular intervention that drives you from your home, just a yearning to get out and see the world.

Well of course its a stupid marketing scam, they would be downright silly not to call it BG3, after all thats why they called BG2, BG when it had nothing to do with Baldurs Gate the citty, and the citty had nothing to do with the story.
But the first game was a good sucsess and the second one didnt do bad at all either, and a third one will be just as good for making some money, just because it has the name BG.
I dont mind honestly they can scam all they want i just dont want any more bhaalspawn stories, drow stories, drizzit, underdarks, god slaying players, cheap gameplay that gets you the best items in the second chapters and so forth.

I love the city of baldur's gate but it is time to move on possibly moving the setting into calimshan or thay or heck even waterdeep
"Waterdeep: shadows of thay" Or
somthing on the time of troubles playing as one of the mortals who rise to goddom like Cyric or Mask or have something about Waukeen who dissipeered during the time of Troubles possibly...
But maybe try some kind of different places like Evermeet or somthing
