Dwarven Urgrosh?

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

What's a Dwarven Urgrosh? I get the clue it's a special weapon that dwarves treat as martial like the Dwarven Waraxe. However, I can't find any detail about it. Anyone care to explain?

The dwarven urgrosh is a double weapon with an axe head on one side and a spear on the other.
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Interesting. I would think that, say, a hammer/axe combination would be almost as effective. Anything other combo weapons ever come into effect?

Quite a few actually. In addition to the Dwarven urgrosh there's the Orcish double-axe, Gnomish hooked hammer, dire flail, and double-sword.

I've definitely heard of the hooked hammer (Temple of Elemental Evil) and the double-sword (from reading up on equipment from NwN). Dire flail does ring a bell, for some reason. The Orcish double-axe I can picture (possibly due to my "research" on NwN).

The thought of the hammer/axe concept comes from a picture of the Forgotten Realms gnomish god of metalworking, Flandel Steelskin, who is shown holding the shaft of such a weapon/tool. IIRC, it was a war hammer that actually could communicate with the elemental plane of fire, but that's a story for the FR forum. Just thought I'd mention where I came up with the thought in the first place.

Also there is a double scimitar, there are a lot of interesting weapons in the arms and equipment guide.

I remember seeing a Dire Mace somewhere. Not sure where though. But I think I have actually seen pictures of something in real life that resembled a Dwarven Urgrosh. Quite the interesting weapon, and one of the more realistic of the double weapons if I say so myself.

I remember looking up a cool picture of a dwarven urgrosh a year ago, and I've found it again.

Here it is:

Whoah! Interesting.

1) Does that make the urgrosh a two-hander weapon?

2) BTW, where'd that pic come from (as in what original material)?

(P.S.: I chopped out the pic to save up on bandwidth. Hope you don't mind.)

I got it from the EN World site, and they got it from some other material.

Yes, it's a double weapon.

1) Oh, er, I was more hoping to find out where exactly the 'other material' was. :o

2) Cool, a greataxe/spear combo!

agent_orange: Sweet. My local Waldenbooks has PLENTY of copies, so I might as well pick up both that and the Dungeon Master's Guide, which they've been out of for a while, and I've been intrigued to get it.

Well its dwarven and urgrosh.

I think urgrosh is a dwarven name or word
