Help with Initiating Dialogue

Post by The Godfather »

HELP!!! I keep running into this problem with initiating dialogue.... I get "you can not initiate dialogue right now (whoever) apprears busy"

I just was told to meet with Tolgerias (sp) the Coweled Wizard in the Gov district but when I go to talk to him I get that answer... I've left and returned and still get it...

The Paladin and orphan quest in the graveyard I'm getting the same thing I talked to the priest and told him I would talk to Kamir but Kamir is too busy to talk

Is this a timing thing or a bug of some kind or am I just doing something wrong??

Do you have the latest patches installed? That should solve the "cannot initiate dialog" problem

a couple more questions

no I don't have any mods installed... which one would stop that problem??

Also how do you steal from shops? I have Jan at 95% Pickpocket skill but everytime I try to steal from a shop he gets caught... do you have to do something different or is it based on a different stat?

And if Amowennie (or whatever he is so affectionately called on here) is a Dual Class Fighter/Cleric and he has passed his fighter level why can't he use fighter weapons?

Thanks!

It's actually a patch, not a mod, and you can get it here.

That is the right stat, but there's modifiers on it ... a merchant is pretty alert for such things, so you need something like 200% to be successfull.
And if Amowennie (or whatever he is so affectionately called on here) is a Dual Class Fighter/Cleric and he has passed his fighter level why can't he use fighter weapons?
Cleric weapon restrictions are considered ethos based, not skill based. i.e: It's not that he doesn't have the skill to use fighter weapons, but that his God forbids it. So presumably if he tried to use them, he'd lose his God's favour (and therefore all his spells and other clerical abilities).

A patch is not a mod.
Patches are created by the game developers to address problems that occured after the game's release. The "cannot initiate dialogue" problem is such a thing, and the latest official patch (which is available here solves it.
Mods are player made modifications that usually add something to the game like new NPCs, items, battles, quests etc.

If you want to pickpocket from shops you'll need an much better score in pickpocketing for most of the shops, something around 150 should be safe, though there are some shops where a score above 200 is barely enough (Bernard in the Copper Coronet for example) ;)

Dual or multi classed fighter/clerics (and fighter/druids, ranger/clerics, cleric/mages and fighter/mage/clerics) are still restricted to cleric (or druid) wepons, it has nothing to do with surpassing fighter levels. The druid/cleric wepaon restrictcions are always dominant.

Edit: too slow :(
There are three kinds of people that no one understands: geniuses, madmen and guys that mumble.

Official patches:
For Shadows of Amn, you can find the official patch here
*** Install if you do NOT plan to install Throne of Bhaal ***
For Throne of Bhaal, you can find the patch here
*** Do not install unless you have installed Throne of Bhaal ***

Jan's pick pocketing skills:
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. With 95 in your pickpocket skill, you should be able to pickpocket quite a few merchants. You might want to try and raise you pickpocket skill above 100 (you can go to 250, and if you pass that number, your skill will be rest to 1), or drink a few Potions which raise your pickpocket skills. If that doesn't help, well, maybe the official patches do ;)

Fighter weapons:
A Fighter-Cleric is restricted to the weapons a Cleric can you use, so there's nothing wrong here.

Edit: Bloody, even slower than Numinor's "too slow", *sigh* natures call just doesn't pay off anymore...

Thanks!!

Are the effects of Potions of Master Thievery cumulative?

And on demi-human characters do they have limits how high they can advance in a particular class? or is it just based on the xp limit?

Way back when I used to play AD&D Original Edition there was always a limit on Demi-Humans but I dont know if they changed that in any of the newer editions

Yes, they are cumulative. So drink 2 or 3 with Jan, and you'll almost always success to pickpocket something.

AFAIK there's no special limits on demi-humans (that always was a stupid rule anyway - even when I played PnP AD&D, I never followed that one). I've always played with the XP cap removed though, so I'm not positive about that - but I'm pretty sure I would've seen it somewhere by now if it was still in there!

Godfather, you can overcome the weapon restriction obstacle with the Use Any Item ability (at higher levels).
Up the IRONS!
